ShortStory I Unknown Angel

UNKNOWN ANGEL

       By Fred Nwaozor
It was unarguably a groovy outing and a night of bacchanalian revelry. The dance floor was abruptly turned into something else. Obviously, everyone within the hotel hall was extremely excited and motivated owing to the availability of edible varieties which included assorted wines, snacks, meals, and what have you, coupled with the exotic hip-hop jams being played by the Disc Jockey.
Different groups comprising males and females were variously seriously dancing with bottles of wine in their hands at strategic locations in the magnificent hall. It was undoubtedly a high-quality variety disco night made up of classic men and ladies in psychedelic wears and moods that even the blind could see for themselves.
On his part, the celebrant, Chibuike – a high class bachelor – who was gladly catching his fun with his friends and kin was marking his 36th birthday as usual. Being a promiscuous dude, he was dancing with the lady he had chosen to spend the remarkable day with, at one of the corners in the hall. The epoch-making event was taking place at one of the classic hotels situated in the city of Owerri the capital territory of Imo State, Nigeria where Chibuike and most of the invitees were resident in.
“So,” Chima who was seemingly tipsy said. “Who invited you to the show?”
The said dude, an old time friend of Chibuike, was one of the highly respected invitees in the occasion. He was ardently catching his fun with one of the female invitees, Ogechi. Both of them whom were apparently drunk were passionately dancing to the tune of the unending music with bottles of red wine in their hands likewise others present at the arena. The most intriguing and unfortunate aspect of it was that Chima who was a prosperous banker residing in Owerri quit bachelorhood barely few weeks back and had successfully wedded in the church.
More interestingly, he rounded off his 4-week honeymoon with his lovely wife the previous day. Needless to say that his lifestyle wasn’t unlike that of the event host, Chibuike who was yet to settle down in spite of the overflowing wealth he was making in his importation business. To say the least, Chima, 35, managed to tie the knot due to the persistent importunate behaviour he received from his parents whom were also based in Owerri. As the saying goes, ‘birds of a feather flock together’. He had lied to his newly-wedded wife, Nnenna that he was sent by his employer to Lagos State on an errand, which according  to him would last for two days.
“Nkiru,” Ogechi responded, referring to who invited her to the event. “Chibuike’s babe.” She added.
Nkiru was the lady who was rocking the night with the celebrant. The celebrant as well as the host had earlier urged her (Nkiru) to endeavour to attend the party with most of her friends, and Ogechi happened to be one of the lucky ones who accompanied her.
Ogechi, a so-called final year student on one of the campuses in the state was clad in a tight and sparingly transparent blue mini-skirt, sleeveless and sexy pink top that was partially displaying her white bra and black high-heeled shoes. Her crazy dress was obviously showcasing her large boobs as well as shocking hip and butt. She was chocolate, plump and about five-foot tall. Whilst, Chima a light-skinned, about 5.4 feet tall and slim dude was putting on black jean trousers, blue T-shirt, white trainers and a white baseball cap.
“I must confess,” Chima rode on. “You are really looking hot.” He applauded.
      “Really..?”
      “Sure.”
“Thank you.” She appreciated cheerfully. Stylishly straight out her left hand to his head and changed the position of his cap so that its bill would face his back rather than his front; this was to enable her see his supposed handsome face elaborately.
At this time, Chima’s cucumber had aroused that he almost ejaculated in his boxers that was already feeling the unavoidable intense heat and vibration.
Ogechi being a naughty lady observed the abrupt change of mood written all over him as she expected, and then smiled.
“Why the smile?” He enquired, still dancing enthusiastically.
“Nothing,” she replied. “Just admiring your dance style.”
        “Really?”
        “Yea.”
In a few seconds, they dropped the bottles of wine in their respective hands on the dance floor and within a twinkle of an eye, they found themselves in one of the hotel rooms that was made available for him (Chima) by the host. Before you could know it, both parties whom were already on the bed became starkly in the nude.
Chima’s attempt to grab the packet of condom, which he kept in one of the front pockets on his trousers that was already lying on the tiled floor, was aborted by Ogechi who pleaded with him to tango with her without any protective device stating that she enjoyed it when it was ‘skin to skin’.
Chima whose sensation was obviously getting out of hand took heed of the plea and blindly headed for the long awaited marathon race, which ushered him into a different world both therein and thereafter.
Fifteen minutes later, they became saturated. Chima who was lying helplessly in the bed appeared like one who just finished ascending mountain Kilimanjaro.
So pathetic; she had just deliberately infected him with Human Immunodefiency Virus (HIV). Funnily enough, Ogechi was actually HIV positive. Since three months back she confirmed she was living with the virus after several diagnoses conducted in various medical laboratories, she had vowed to infect as many men as possible with the deadly disease, and Chima happened to be her fifth victim.
The following day being Thursday June 16, 2011 at 6:20 in the evening, Chima who was a HIV carrier, albeit ignorantly, arrived his matrimonial home that was at the moment made up of only him and his darling spouse, Nnenna who couldn’t wait for his arrival.
Ironically, Nnenna – a very pretty looking and brilliant damsel at 24 who just graduated from the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) – got married to Chima as a virgin. Before she walked down the aisle with the unknown angel whom she ran into barely few months back when she went to deposit money in the bank where he worked, she vowed that she would never be defiled by any man out of wedlock; and as God would have it, she passionately and firmly stuck to her faith until after her wedding day unknowingly to her that the vigorous labour would end up in vain.
Two months later, Nnenna took in; an awaited moment that brought a totally different phase in their matrimony. Based on the tradition or the routine attached to ante-natal period, in her fourth week of pregnancy, she was diagnosed of all kinds of illnesses and infections with a view to ascertaining her overall health status and capacity and unfortunately and shockingly, she tested positive to HIV.
Afterwards, she wasn’t told of the unimaginable discovery; rather, the doctor requested for her husband’s presence so he could break the news to him. On the contrary, she thought the invitation was to sensitize her husband on how he was meant to take care of her.
When Chima arrived at the hospital, he was enjoined by the doctor to check his HIV status and he complied, though after series of interrogations and enquiries from him (Chima) which were diplomatically attended to by the doctor. Consequently, it was learnt that he was also living with the virus. All these were happening in his wife’s absence.
The doctor used the opportunity to disclose to him that his wife was as well positive. He made him understand that that was what prompted the sudden invitation.
Chima who was devastated and dumbfounded over the incident needed not an interpreter to inform him that the unforeseen and unthinkable medical results were as a result of his uncontrollable randy nature, thus he felt like hanging himself. What pained his person most was that he had deceived an innocent woman whom could be best described as a god-sent.
Thereafter when he got home, he broke the breaking news to his poor wife who fainted the moment she fully absorbed it. Consequently, she suffered from miscarriage.
Notwithstanding, it would interest you to note that currently the couple in question is living happily and healthily with the infection. Chima has completely turned a new leaf. The marriage is at the moment blessed with three kids – a male and two females – and none of the children contracted the virus.

Analysis I 58 Years On: Should We Celebrate?

58 YEARS ON: SHOULD WE CELEBRATE?

By Fred Nwaozor
Nigeria, the acclaimed giant of Africa, graciously clocked 58 on October 1, 2018. I gathered the Independence anniversary has instilled mixed feelings among the teeming Nigerians.

In some quarters across the Nigerian State, many have argued that the commemoration deserves no iota of applause let alone celebrating it. Whilst, some are, on the contrary, of the view that the country has gone too far, hence ought to be celebrated by all and sundry.

It’s imperative to take into cognizance that at such a time like this, diverse opinions are usually obtained among the concerned entities and individuals at large. But no matter the way we try to view the scenario, we aren’t meant to forget that facts are invariably sacrosanct.

Before we draw our conclusion as regards where we are at the moment, it would be very pertinent for us to painstakingly take reference from the history book towards ensuring that derailment isn’t encountered in the process.

Nigeria became a British protectorate in 1901. The colonization lasted till 1960 when the country succeeded in gaining her independence. She first became a republic in 1963 but succumbed to military rule three years later, which emerged through a bloody coup d’état.

Furthermore, a separatist movement agitated for Republic of Biafra in 1967, leading to the three-year civil war. The country returned to a republic after a new constitution was drafted and ratified in 1979. Pathetically, the second republic was short-lived when the military seized power again four years down the line.

Subsequently, a third republic emerged in 1993 but was fiercely dissolved by yet another military interruption led by General Sani Abachi. The said army general passed on in 1998. Consequently, a fourth republic was established the following year being 1999, which ended three decades of intermitted autocratic leadership.

Nigeria has really gone a long way. She has thus far squarely faced the numerous challenges life could bring. She has been able to outshine a few of the barriers but is yet to overcome some other critical ones, particularly those that are severely staring at her beautiful physiognomy.

Just like a man or any human who was born on a certain day. And as he grows, he learns that life, which could be described as unfair, presents mankind with two glaring options namely: the choice to live or to pass away. If such man is truly determined to live despite all odds, then he must be ready to look the challenges right in their faces, hence ought to be willing to withstand them at all cost.

But if he feels he cannot make reasonable life out of his existence here on earth, he would definitely give up in the long run. And as time progresses, he might even decide to take his life by himself. It’s noteworthy that despair, which often leads to suicidal mission, remains the worst thought a man could nurture.

In the case of Nigeria, she has hitherto proven to everyone her utmost desire to survive. She has ab initio obviously displayed a high level of gallantry toward her readiness to not just sustaining survival but soar beyond the sky in spite of the outpouring hindrances.

For instance, to have been able to steadily sustain democracy since the emergence of the fourth republic in 1999 till date is enough reason to applaud her efforts. Notwithstanding the population, which is currently nearing two hundred million, Nigeria has in recent times been relatively able to accommodate her teeming subjects as one indivisible members of a given nation.

Aside politics, Nigerians as a people are doing marvelously well in various fields of human endeavour, both at home and in the Diaspora. The citizens of the country residing abroad have in different occasions made us proud by writing their names in gold. These and many more are the obvious reasons Nigeria deserves to be genuinely celebrated as she clocks 58.

However, as we celebrate her, the leaders mustn’t fail to take note of some socio-political and economic plights that ought to be given a thorough attention if the country intends to record successes in its thrive towards survival and greatness.

Nigeria, just like most other African nations, is a country where the institutions are weaker than the individuals domiciled therein. In the Nigerian society in general, the latter is seemingly stronger than the former, thereby making mockery of such several constituted authorities as the law enforcement agencies, thus defacing the outlook of the country’s extant laws and policies.

This anomaly must be addressed headlong by strengthening the existing institutions, especially at this period the present administration is ostensibly hell bent to end the lingering effects of corrupt practices and allied lifestyles.

Another critical predicament Nigeria is faced with is the ongoing phenomenon whereby the politicians see leadership, or holding a political office, as an avenue for self aggrandizement rather than service as it is seen in advanced countries.

This irritating situation could be addressed by henceforth reducing the take-home pay cum other accruable allowances of political office holders as well as ensuring that every expenditure is accounted to and in line with the approved budget.

So, as Nigeria celebrates, she must be reminded that even though the country is no longer where it used to be, there’s still a long distance to cover as regards the anticipated change. Think about it!

TechDeck I Television Satellite And Its Intrigues

TELEVISION SATELLITE AND ITS INTRIGUES

By Fred Nwaozor

A satellite is a celestial object or spacecraft that orbits another object while serving for a particular purpose. It could be natural or artificial (manmade).

The Moon is a good example of a natural satellite that orbits the Earth. The world’s first ever artificial satellite – the Sputnik 1 – was launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Since then, countless satellites have been launched into the Earth’s orbit.

So far, about 6,600 satellites have been launched by different countries around the globe. Survey shows that, by 2013, 3600 of them remained in orbit. Among these, only about 1,000 were operational, whilst the rest have lived out their useful lives and thus become mere space debris.

Research further indicates that approximately 500 operational satellites are in low-Earth orbit (at about 2000km altitude), 50 are in medium-Earth orbit or intermediate circular orbit (at about 20000km altitude), and the rest are in geostationary orbit (at about 36000km altitude).

It’s worth noting that satellites are used for many purposes. Common types include the weather satellites, navigation satellites, military cum civilian earth observation satellites, communications satellites, and space telescopes.

Moreover, space stations and human spacecrafts in orbit are equally known as satellites. This discussion, as long as it lasts, would border on communications satellites, particularly ‘television satellite’ as the topic implies.

A communications satellite, which is purposely deploys for telecommunications, is an artificial satellite that relays and amplifies radio telecom signals via a transponder. It creates a communication channel between a source transmitter and a receiver at different locations on the Earth.

It is used for television, radio, internet, telephone, or military applications, as might be the case. There are, at the moment, over 2,000 communications satellites in the Earth’s orbit, used by both private and government organizations.

Wireless communication via television, for instance, uses electromagnetic (EM) waves to carry signals. These waves require line-of-sight, and are thus obstructed by the curvature of the Earth. The prime purpose of communications satellite is to relay the signal around the curve of the Earth allowing communication between widely separated points.

A communications satellite uses a wide range of radio and microwave frequencies. To avoid signal interference, international bodies have regulations for which frequency range, or band, any firm is allowed to use.

Specifically, Television (TV) satellite delivers TV programming using signals relayed from space radio stations. The signals are received via an outdoor parabolic reflector antenna often referred to as a satellite dish, and a low-noise block (LNB) down-converter.

A satellite receiver then decodes the desired TV programme for viewing on a TV set. The receiving device can be in form of an external set-top box known as ‘decoder’, or a built-in TV tuner. On TV satellite, some transmissions and channels are unencrypted, hence are free-to-air or free-to-view, whilst many other channels are transmitted with encryption requiring a subscription.

Most homes these days are set up for Cable TV, though there’s a growing number who have opted for the more advanced Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) TV commonly called ‘Satellite TV’. With newer technologies in satellite broadcast being developed, it has apparently overtaken cable pattern of broadcast. Meanwhile, there are two sides to satellite TV that you should consider before cutting your ties with cable provider.

Satellite TV has access to a wide range of channels and services, especially in geographic areas without terrestrial/cable TV. The ability to receive and send broadcast signals using satellite tech increases the possibilities of gaining access to channels from other countries that utilize similar tech for broadcasting. Hence, you are not restricted to only the channels on cable networks. DBS TV has high-quality audio and picture display compared to cable TV.

DBS TV possesses parental lock-out options. It takes the worry out of parents who are concerned at what their kids are watching while they are away. Most DBS TV receivers are now able to block certain channels from a TV set.

It equally has WebTV option, contrary to cable TV that does not. Internet data can be transmitted wirelessly, thus DBS TV can receive internet service from your TV set. In addition, it has digital video recorders. With some satellite TV receivers, one can record shows/programmes directly to a hard-disk drive for playback later.

However, for initial investment, the receiver and satellite dish could be exorbitant. Similarly, multiple TV sets would require multiple receivers unlike in the case of cable TV, thereby making both installation and sustenance very expensive if one has more than one TV set at home.

Its installation techniques, which involved many technologies, might attract additional charges. Above all, DBS can malfunction in bad weather. Since the satellite dish is usually located outdoors, it becomes susceptible to malfunction owing to atmospheric conditions like rainfall, strong winds, snow, or lightning, or what have you. For instace, thunderstorm could pose a threat to, or even completely damage, the receiver.

However, it’s noteworthy that obtaining high quality products could help to curtail or prevent any of these anomalies. Hence, we are advised to invariably opt for products manufactured by reliable firms whenever we intend to upgrade our viewing pleasure. This precaution can best be adhered to by involving an expert when need be.

Whatever the case might be, the fact is: TV satellite remains the best mode of radio cum micro waves transmission. But it’s pertinent to note that its installation and day-to-day maintenance require sound and adequate professional attention. Think about it!
