Mathematics & its Odyssey

MATHEMATICS AND ITS ODYSSEY SO FAR

Even if one is suffering from haemophilia, we still need to understand that same person is made up of a reasonable amount of haemoglobin. In other words, the term “haemoglobin” known as the red blood pigment which is widely recognized as one of the fundamental functional units in the body of mankind is expected to be present in any living person’s circulatory system regardless of the condition being faced by him/her.

In case we have forgotten; let me draw us closer to some certain facts. We were told that in the beginning God created man in His own image having created all other things/creatures in existence. But have you ever in your lonely mood imagined how those systems in our body were factored together to function as a single formidable structure? You can imagine or be disturbed on how certain things came into existence, but that doesn’t mean that you must come out with a tangible answer. Yes, thinking is natural but the metamorphosis of some of our thoughts may be tagged as supernatural.

Let’s have it this way; those imaginary thoughts that may end up being fruitless, or those deeds/events that we cannot find the reason behind their occurrence are known as mysteries. So having noted this fact, we are bound to realize that there is limit for every ability possessed by mankind. We should also acknowledge that, there are certain qualities we cannot shy or run away from because nature has mandated us to possess some elements of such quality.

This edition has Mathematics as its topic. Mathematics is a subject which involves the study of numbers, quantities, or shapes.

Some time ago, one of my academic sons called from Lagos State to inform me that he secured admission in University of Lagos (UNILAG) to study Mathematics. He told me that he never applied for the discipline, but it was offered to him as an alternative. I knew he was not too sound in mathematics; so I asked him how he intends to cope. He responded that he was going to maneuver every obstacle by using any possible means. I laughed, and frowned too. Yes my physiognomy showcased both idiosyncrasies. It wasn’t a paradox considering the circumstance in question. Because the statement discharged by the poor boy was amusing and devastating.

It is no longer news that Mathematics remains the basis of all sciences, both pure and advanced including social. Yes, there’s no social science discipline that does not depend on or not affiliated to Mathematics.

Above all, I want to state here unequivocally that likewise any famous language on earth, be it spoken or unspoken, Mathematics remains the most famous language in the universe, though may be regarded as an unspoken language. I call it unspoken because no one/group officially recognizes or uses Mathematics as a means of communication. But notwithstanding, I define it as the only language being used by mankind in its day-to-day activity. Take for instance, someone can dwell without all spoken languages on earth since we have other languages or means of communication such as signs, telepathy et cetera, but no one can dwell without observing Mathematics as a language either knowingly or unknowingly. Thus, Mathematics which I call a language of numbers or numerals is widely observed/used by all and sundry. If you doubt me or if you are skeptical over my analysis/opinion, then kindly take a walk to any bus-stop close to you. I bet you; you will discover that even the touts speak Mathematics. In a nut shell, no one can run away from mathematics. It’s natural.

Despite the enormous value attached to Mathematics, it has been abused greatly by most of us including the so-called teachers/tutors of the subject. Go to most of our secondary schools; you will see that the subject is no longer considered seriously by the respective management of the schools. A high rate of apathy has been registered by both the students and teachers as regards Mathematics studies. Even those who have high interest in the subject have lately begun to decline in their acquired skill/enthusiasm due to lack of support or encouragement from their mentors, teachers, or relatives as the case may be.

Apart from the above, so many pathetic utterances are being dished out on a daily basis by several students. For instance, it severely beats my psyche whenever I hear a student say that he/she is reading or was reading Maths in the library. One can’t read or peruse over Mathematics. You can only solve Maths; there’s is no two ways about it.

Brethren, we all must reconsider the high importance of Mathematics in any societal growth or evolution and see how we can contribute our quota towards its promotion. The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), concerned government agencies, stakeholders and prominent individuals in the society should from time-to-time issue an Award to any best performing mathematics students in our various schools which shall serve as a motivation. The schools on their own effort ought to ensure that any applicant to be employed as a Mathematics teacher/lecturer must be duly tested to ensure that he/she is equal to the task that awaits him/her.

Don’t forget, we all must continue to think in the right direction for this enormous challenge yielding these societal cankers to be duly overcome. And the ripe time to act is now. Think about it!

THREE VITAL TOOLS FOR WRITERS

ABILITY, IMMUNITY AND CONSCIOUSNESS:

3 VITAL TOOLS FOR WRITERS

If you are a good and genuine informant and/or educator, then have it in mind that you have been helping to keep thousands of souls alive. On the other hand; if you’re talkative, don’t forget that millions of innocent souls have gone beneath the earth crust as a result of your worthless idiosyncrasy.

Also, as an individual with high profundity, if your optimum interest is to make people around you informed/learned as you are or more learned than you are, then in you, nature is fulfilled. On a different note; if you belong to the team that believes or is being guided with the ideology that the world should be turned ablaze just for its selfish interest, then in you, nature is cursed.

Brethren, both in my leisure and business moment, I have taken time to ask myself and as well think aloud, what the universe would have been like provided there is nothing like information or information dissemination. Sometimes I also ask myself if some other learned fellows are occupied with same or similar thought. But my last encounter with a friend and mentor who happens to be a senior lecturer ushered me into a line of conclusion that most brains are really busy.

If you take a close look at the topic for today, you will discover that we’re discussing writers generally. When I say generally, I meant both creative and non-creative writers. That is; any person/personnel involved in any form of writing. Someone who supports information dissemination. A fellow that encourages change/development. In a nut shell, a crusader of education. Yes, because if there’s no writing, information will never be properly disseminated. And, if there’s no writing, change or adequate development would not be guaranteed. More so, zero writing is tantamount to a society with zero education which is significantly, a blind society.

This is to say that, writers are indeed the backbone of any genuine societal change. In other words, no society/union can dwell without writers or writing.

Having noted the above facts, I also want to use this avenue to notify the people involved or the concerned personnel on the tools they are meant to embrace to ensure adequate/genuine professionalism. Because, any profession has ethics guiding it. In the writing profession, the participant must understand that tools such as ability, immunity and consciousness are not to be taken for granted if effective and efficient and above all, progressive professionalism must be attained. Let’s ride on!

One’s ability to do something is the quality or skill that makes it possible for him/her to do it. There is certain skill requires in writing. This is why you can’t come from anywhere and decide to embark on writing, especially in creative writing. You must possess the needed skill before you could stride successfully. It’s a fact. Yes, a fancy fact! For instance, this is why most times people who lack the skill to write or compile academic materials such as text book end up copying works originated by other academics. And this syndrome has led to a high increase in piracy. If you have the interest to write, next thing you ought to do is to ensure that you acquire the necessary skill needed in writing. This aspect is of great importance, therefore must not be overlooked.

Secondly, immunity according to the context of this edition is the defence one has towards something harmful. Having acquired the needed skill to write, you must also ensure that you have some immunity guiding you. From my humble perspective, the greatest key to one’s immunity room is his/her conscience. In Igbo land, our ancestors call it “ogu na ofo” or “ofo na ogu”. Thus, you must write to satisfy your conscience, else, that would be the beginning of your downfall.

The last but not the least is consciousness. Your consciousness is your mindset coupled with your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes. Every writer is expected to be conscious of what he/she does, say or write regardless of the circumstance. You must endeavour to think in the right direction and continually stick to tangible ideologies. You should be aware of the impact you always create through your writing prowess or creative ingenuity. Write to educate, entertain, inform and above all, to foster absolute development and extreme unity among mankind or amongst the members of any society you find yourself.

Honestly brethren, we must do this thing right for our society to be better. Do it to please He who sent you, and not to achieve your selfish goal/desire. Mind you, you don’t need to be talkative if this must work. Think about it!

AWO-OMAMMA

AWO-OMAMMA AND ITS AGGRIEVED OCCUPANTS

Brethren, gone are the days when virtually all men and women were known for their extreme honesty and sincerity. The days are also gone when kids or children were known for their intense respect for the adult folks or the elderly ones. But if we must analyze, then I will unequivocally tell you that there will never be respect or respect would never hold in any honesty-free society because honesty or sincerity ascertains human dignity. Thus apparently in recent times, the stride or crusade towards obtaining a society loaded with the euphoria of human respect seem to be a mirage since the only tool that ascertains human dignity has been tremendously betrayed. Let’s put it this way; respect is a product or one of the products of human dignity or reputation. On the other hand, dignity is a product of honesty/sincerity. In a nut shell, a dishonest fellow is really day-dreaming if he/she expects respect from his/her junior or younger ones.

The above should not just be seen as a conviction or ideology of the columnist, rather ought to be regarded as a fact. I’m just representing the people by putting up this critique, thus I strongly believe thousands of souls would have come up with similar view many years before now provided they were granted the opportunity. In other words, I’m not alone or I’m not standing on this rostrum alone, therefore I shouldn’t feel lonely.

Penultimate week on the 28th of January, Monday precisely, I had one of the greatest shocks in my life which yielded a very high level of sensitivity that has been hidden in me. Before then, I had always thought that I would never be sensitive to that extent. In the morning of that fateful day exactly eight o’clock on the dot, I received a phone call from one of my relatives in Awo-Omamma, my home town who happens to be my bosom friend. Before the call came in, I just concluded ironing the clothes I would use for the day in my humble lodge at Owerri. As soon as I picked the call, the caller exclaimed “Doc, what are you still doing at Oweerri while Awo-Omamma is on fire?” in his high voice. ‘Doc’ has been a name I was known for since my childhood and most of my friends and relatives go by it. Honestly, I couldn’t comprehend where the fellow was coming from, therefore having taken a quick breath in subsequent to his exclamation, I urged him to expatiate his striking headline which he did in haste before he dropped the call. At that point, I needed not a prophet to inform me that truly Awo-Omamma has been set ablaze. As a concerned indigene, without taking my usual morning bath, I hurriedly gathered myself and began my journey to my home town.
Beloved, on reaching Awo-omamma junction, I was astonished and dumbfounded over what I saw through my panoramic view. The entire Awo-Omamma junction which happens to be situated at the federal road, Onitsha-Owerri road to be precise was blocked owing to a protest initiated by the entire youths of the town. There was no atom of movement and I learnt the protest had lasted for over three hours before my arrival. Even the pedestrians were finding it difficult to migrate. As soon as I got down from the taxi which I boarded, I tried to enquire what really prompted the protest. I was informed that my fellow indigenes/youths were protesting about bad road, poor drainage system and non power supply in some of the areas. The bone of contention was the State road that leads to Okwudor in Njaba L.G.A.

According to the honourable representing Oru East State Constituency in the person of Hon. Barr. Greg Okemili who was there to see things for himself, I learnt the contract for the construction of the road in question had already been awarded to All Seasons construction Company and that the company had been duly paid the sum of 10.8 million naira for the contract. In his further speech, he made the unarmed mob to know that he has severally written to the government for the contract to be rewarded to a different company but all to no avail. After the convincing speech given by the house member, the aggrieved youths agreed among themselves to give the State government more benefit of doubt. In respect to the agreement, the road-block was put to an end at about twenty minutes past eleven (11:20 am) having lasted for over four hours.

Apart from the road issue, for over one year now if I’m not mistaken, the occupants of the community located within the Awo-Omamma junction have been experiencing total black-out due to lack of transformer. And other social amenities the locality has been deprived of. Who is deceiving who? Question yet to be answered.

Brethren, should we continue to live like people destined to experience penury due to the insincere lyrics being dished out by the unworthy musicians or poets amongst us; where has our honesty gone or travelled to? What blasphemy!

Democracy & Technocracy

DEMOCRACRACY AND TECHNOCRACY: THE GENESIS OF

A PROPOSED PROMISE-LAND

It’s preposterous for one to see freedom as an unnecessary circumstance. More so, it’s extremely painful and devastating for one to be deprived of his freedom of speech in any circumstance or arena he might find himself. And this, freedom of speech, remains the most distinct feature finds in democracy. Summarily, democracy is a way forward.

According to BBC English dictionary, “democracy is a system of government or organization in which the citizens or members choose leaders or make other important decisions by voting”. In Political Science, “it’s the government of the people, by the people, and for the people”. From my humble perspective, democracy is the chorus or anthem of a certain organization that is being understood and sang by the entire members of the organization/union. On the other hand, technocracy can be referred to as a system of government controlled by scientists, engineers, and other experts.

In Nigeria, and most other countries in the world, democracy is our prerogative and ought to be duly sustained because it’s a welcome development. Any democratic state requires adequate pampering without using the baby “pampers”. It should at all time remain prescient. A practice that gives peace to those concerned requires sustenance. Something or a circumstance that all and sundry pray for, or pray to have/experience should be worthy of emulation, and therefore, shouldn’t be taken for granted. Taking Nigeria as a case study; the occupants and every member of this country prayed and fasted for democracy because we saw it working in other civilized and advanced countries. Fortunately, it has come to stay. But, our extreme concern should be, how it could be sustained. How can it remain a formidable working tool in Nigeria just as it is seen and adored in many developed countries? If you have been far from the truth in respect to democracy, this is a very great avenue that shall bring you a bit closer to the truth. And what is the truth? The truth remains that, for democracy to be functional, and not stagnant or non-productive, we must be ready to showcase its technicality. The technicalities of a process/system or activity are the detailed methods used to do it.

The dream of any individual or organization is to embrace the “promise-land”. And this can never be achieved without observing the technicality of the procedure(s) involved. Even, before Israelites embraced the promise-land, it was as if they saw “hell” in the process. They observed the procedure. In other words, there was enormous sacrifice rendered by them.

The technicality behind the progress of democracy in any given society is science. Yes, science and technology. And, that is technocracy. In a nut shell, technocracy is an activity in which a given administration embraces science to the fullness. Any system of government, irrespective of the nature, can introduce technocracy and it must work. But it is only in democracy that technocracy would work effectively because it’s the only system that understands and practices the language of vote(s). I put it up to you that, voting is the basis or rudiments of technocracy. Thus, for it (technocracy) to yield a very positive output, it must be introduced at the foundation level. And it must be used throughout; that is, starting from the foundation up to the peak of the structure. Now, the question is; how could it, technocracy/science, be applied?

For our votes to count, we must embrace science. The electronic voting system which would be actualized by the introduction and adequate use of the electronic voting machine must be considered and duly implemented. This system or routine would enable both our voting and counting to be hyper-transparent. Then, in the process of electing the people/contestants of our choice, we must ensure that, experts are mostly considered.

Having elected the people of our choice with the aid of science, since the voting system/pattern is also observed in the various House of Assemblies, the members of the legislature should ensure that their votes go to a nominee that has a full technical knowledge of his/her field in the aspect of ministerial appointment, and other possible appointments both in the states and federal levels. Even while awarding a contract to a certain corporate body, similar fact should also be noted by both the executive and legislative councils / personnel. We must continue to think in the right direction to ensure that technocrats occupy the system. For this to work, we must learn to tell ourselves the truth. Thus, the issue of free and fair must be invoked and practised.

So brethren, for our proposed promise-land (vision 20:20:20) to be embraced, or be a reality, our ongoing democratic system or socio-political freedom must be coupled with technocracy or be filled with good number of technocrats, and not bureaucracy. Therefore, democracy and technocracy are intertwined. Think about it!

My harmless hammer (poem)

MY HARMLESS HAMMER

They fired me,

I resisted the fire.

I hammered them,

They encountered harm.

Theirs,

The irresistible bullet.

Mine,

The cartridge of

My harmless pen.

Brethren,

The irresistible,

Wow, was resistible!

The harmless,

Oh, so harmful!

The People's Eye (poem)

THE PEOPLE’S EYE

Feeling of great tenderness

For the militant tendency

Right from a tender age

Tends to save more souls.

Never mind

My tendentious note on

The tenacious person’s acts

But we need

To take note of

The activists’ acts.

Though, I’m not tentative

Because it’s a fact

But I smile tentatively.

I speak with no tension

But with the highest tempo

Of my humble fat,

I can’t be a tenant

In my tenement.

In fact, I’m on tenterhooks

Because,

My idea is not tenuous,

Therefore,

I can’t come to grief.

Security challenges in Nigeria

SCENIC SCENARIOS: THE WAY FORWARD (5)

Our physiognomies have suddenly turned sour due to the deceptive countenance of our ‘great’ nation. Even a fancy smile played across her normally grim visage wasn’t enough to wipe out the virulent feelings.

A good friend of mine once told me a horrible story. Before he commenced the folk tale, he began with a nasty clause which reads, “in any state of sober I found myself, I do remember one fateful day with extreme loathing.” Don’t worry. Just relax; I shall tell you the story. I’m not amazed; many have started calling me by the name, “a story narrator.” Honestly, I care about stories, because, I believe the best way to teach is to begin with a story, either tragic, comical or tragicomic. So, my fans were not mistaken.

The story goes like this: The young man said, one certain day, he happened to be in one of the banks in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. He was busy transacting as usual. Suddenly, or as satan would have it, armed robbers invaded the banking premises and started shooting on the rampage. Everyone was subjected to the harshest possible punishment; lying without breathing. What a paradox! At this point, I was forced to smile. But, I found out my friend wasn’t looking funny at all. With the look on his face, I realized he wasn’t in any way joking, or exaggerating. Even, I noticed my sudden smile was so disgusting to him. He continued, “…the most painful and deadliest part of it was that, after dishing out the instruction, one of them, knowingly or unknowingly, quickly stood on my bottom. He remained there for quite some seconds, or a good number of minutes if I’m not mistaken, before returning to the floor.“ I asked him if he imagined why such scene transpired. He replied that, from his weak imagination, the man (robber) in question wanted to increase his height due to his urgent indulgence in one of the activities he was involved. According to him (my friend), it appeared the robber never noticed (observed) that he was standing on a living creature. Extremely pathetic! Brethren, I think at this point, the narration has become succinct.

Over the years, I decided to remain introspective with regard to security. Honestly, I would have exploded before now, and it might have resulted to manic depression or paranoid schizophrenia. Who knows? Thank God I’m still alive, and safe, though still introverted. A bashful introvert indeed! Please, don’t blame me; I’m just being security conscious. After all, it isn’t my fault. Yes, in this case, my actions have been faultless. Anyone, or a right thinking person can testify to that. It’s no longer news to any one of us that, at recent times, they had cultivated the habit of even picking or molesting those that can’t even boast of ten thousand naira (#10,000) in their bank account. To be frank, the fanatics are mean; and are up to something. It’s not a joke.

Don’t forget, today we’re discussing the Nigerian security sector (system). Security refers to all the precautions that are taken to protect a place including its occupants. In other words, according to BBC English dictionary, “ it is legal protection against possible harm or loss.”

You’ll agree with me that, many had been convicted of seditious activities. Many are still in the trial, while, many are yet to be tried. Rampant security threats have suddenly become the order of the day in all nook and cranny of our dear country as if Nigeria is made of only citizens that are barely few days old. Secularism has gotten a strong current in the structure and ideology of this country. Even the secularists parade themselves in such a manner that any concerned Nigerian would conclude that, they are the king makers. Many had been martyred, yet it appears like a scene that just begun, or that was introduced barely few seconds ago; which means, or significantly, enormous massacre may still be witnessed. What a shame!

Or, should we forget the national security threat and discuss that of the community level? At the community stage, it’s no longer a game for the adulthood; that is, unlike before, adulthood has been totally abolished as the prerequisite. Bunch of adolescents have taken over the houses (homes) in most communities. Yes, most homes have been taken hostage. Their bulk of metals arouse people from sleep within the holy hours of the night. Honestly, yester-night’s incident that took place at one of the towns in the State (Imo State) could well arouse the settlers to even greater violence. Yes, the case has constituted tremendous controversy.

Though, each day, billions of naira are being coughed up for the sake of security. As a crime analyst, what could I have done than to watch with keen interest and continually embrace my harmless pen, and as well, look up to the ‘Almighty’ for His tremendous ingenuity.

Please, we ought to tell ourselves the truth and forget this cock and bull story that is constituting these lingering doubts and suspicions. Apparently, we’re deceiving ourselves and it would take us nowhere.

See you next week on labour; the last on my list but not the least!

Nigerian Refineries

SCENIC SCENARIOS: THE WAY FORWARD (4)

If you’re a true Christian, what stops you from going through your copy of the holy bible at least every morning? If you’re a dedicated Muslim, you ought to be knowledgeable to acknowledge that, your Quran comes first as soon as you leave your noble bed. Or, are you a pagan? Then, I should assume that, you embraced your oracle at its chamber before leaving your lovely house/lodge this morning. Stick to it, you would see that the ‘Almighty is good’. As a devoted Christian, catholic to be precise, I said my rosary this morning as usual, coupled with my daily psalms. I don’t think I’m clowning, so, don’t see me as a clown; because, if every single soul in Nigeria sticks to its respective religious faith, then, these incessant barbarous and inhuman atrocities shouldn’t had taken place.

Honestly, without mincing words, the last time I checked, Nigeria was still an inhospitable nation due to the unnecessary use of those terrible and inhumane weapons. Yes, they had acted in an inhumane way and overstepped the limits of a democratic state. What an inhumanity!

Brethren, let’s leave the issue of security for the subsequent edition that would solely digest the security sector in Nigeria. Today, our concern is on refineries. But, I want to quickly inform you that, all these insecurity issues are attributed to only one thing, which is oil and gas (petroleum). Yes, the oil and gas sector has been constituting these series of dream-like thoughts that were solely initiated by those scattered technicoloured phantasmagorias. This is not scaremongering. It’s high time we faced reality, because, this is nothing but a fact. You might say I’m being scathing. But, I must tell you, the present state of loggerheads in the Nigerian state (society) is not just producing a political and economic morass, but as well, scatterbrains. I’m deeply afraid; this may lead to fathomless socio-economic miscarriages. Think about it.

Few days ago, someone called me on phone to find out why the sudden change of phone number on my column. He asked, “Does it has anything to do with security? “ I responded, “No, just a way forward.” He added, “…therefore, that should be one of the Scenic Scenarios? “ And, I replied, “…yes, my brother! “ Brethren, if rampant change of number could determine a serene environment, then, what stops me from changing thousands of them? I’m a patriotic Nigerian; therefore, my optimum concern should be way forward. And, this cannot be ascertained without tranquility. Thus, any right thinking Nigerian should be concerned with the success of the nation, or any society he/she belongs. When I was an undergraduate, at a point I was known by the name, “way forward”, because, I happened to be an advocate (a crusader) of that phrase. I used to preach it in every occasion I happened to be present. For that reason, most times, my fellow students/colleagues would walk up to me and asked, “FDN, what is the way forward? “ And, as God would have it, I was loaded with enormous information then, with the help of my position as a student leader. Yes, by His grace, I was a leader of various student unions.

It is deeply pathetic and disgusting to hear that a country like ours, which is tagged as the sixth most oil producing nation in the world, still buys the oil in question from other nation(s). Listen to this; something being drilled here happens to be refined elsewhere. Then, finally undergoes importation to ensure that its land of origin embraces its worthwhile products. How does it sound? Isn’t it apocryphal? Then, if this is the case, we’re just being vainglorious. Do the observation yourself and see if I’m truly communicating. Vainglorious posturing indeed!

The only way to stay out of this mess is to tell ourselves the truth. We must be transparent to ensure success. And, such requires total overhaul. Honestly, subsidy removal is not enough. It’s not the best or even one of the best steps. We all know the best step that is why I began this paragraph with the above remark; telling ourselves nothing but the truth. We shouldn’t look unto God; we can redeem the situation. Yes, the redeemer lies in our bare hands. Please, don’t misunderstand me; I mean we have the ability, or what it takes. The only thing we’re meant to do is to apply it. Let’s do the application. I bet you, it’ll surely work. Or, should I emphasize on how the application should be done.

There are already existing refineries across the federation; name them. All we need to do is to revive them, regardless of how much it would cost us. Even if it would cost us our fortune, it shouldn’t be of any stress. Therefore, no one is expected to be selfish while the implementation is going on. The capital for the revival is already there; it’s available. Even without the removal of oil subsidy, it can be actualized. Yes, we worth more

than what the situation requires. Our only problem is nothing but corruption. But, we can put it to stop if we truly mean business. Thank God, we’ve detected the actual fault. So, it’s easy to solve the problem.

Don’t forget, a country like Nigeria shouldn’t be selling oil to the citizenry, rather, should be sold for free of charge. Believe me, it’s our entitlement. The only monetary involvement that ought to be attached to the oil/gas price is tax. Yes, the indirect tax that is expected to be paid by the populace/individuals. Our great leaders should please save us from these moments of extraordinary poignancy. How can one have (possess) abundant cooking oil in the kitchen, but still cook without oil. Doesn’t it sound ridiculous?

Brethren, see you next week on security!

The Educational sector

SCENIC SCENARIOS: THE WAY FORWARD (3)

Brethren, it’s so pathetic to see a man to whom reading meant so much become almost totally blind. Believe me, Nigeria is a country loaded or blessed with numerous citizens that acknowledge/cherish the efficacy of education. But, on the contrary, she looks pathetically defenseless as regards the tool (education). Off course, it’s no longer news that, about fourty percent (40%) of the country is reckoned to be illiterate. The funniest part is that, none of the children of the officialdom is schooling in Nigeria. The other day, I was privileged to overhear someone exclaiming, “ bunch of derailed homosapiens! “ I thought he was referring to me. Who knows? Honestly, the whole mythology of national greatness that occupies the minds of the entire citizenry needs to be questioned, because, it’s inconsequential.

Don’t forget, this edition is exclusively discussing the Nigerian educational sector. And, I promise not to be ponderous, because, “ a word is enough for the wise.” Like I’ve always said, as a patriotic analyst, my interest in any problem I’m discussing lies in its causes, and the remedial and drastic measures (steps) that are required to be taken. So, my sole interest in this is the causes of the on-going educational decay or crisis, and how such can be boycotted.

At the end of this critique, an exegesis wouldn’t be necessary because it shall be self-explanatory. The only thing I can’t promise you is, withholding the fact. Yes, the truth must be told (analyzed).

Education is the act or process through which a person is taught better ways of doing something or a better way of living. Going by the definition, one could figure out that, education can take place anywhere. Let me use this avenue to draw your attention to one of my previous editions that reads “ the world: an institution where everyone is a student. “ On that edition, I made it clear that education can take place anywhere; I categorically stated that anywhere can serve as a classroom, including your kitchen. In addition, let me also remind you of the remark I made mention of, in my immediate previous edition that discussed health, which came from one of my female fans. In her remarks, she said that, she sees me not just as a writer, but also, as an educator. If truly that education can only take place in an institutional classroom as many presume, then, the lady was wrong, because she had never for once seen me in any classroom. So, in a nut shell, education simply means ‘learning’, and learning could be actualized anywhere even in a moving vehicle.

Let’s go into the business of today. If the truth must be told, then, where do we start, or what do we start with? We must commence somewhere. The rapid constant decay in our educational sector is directly attributable to lack of adequate training/teaching institutes (centres), coupled with standard teaching materials, high rate of depreciation of reading habit amongst the students and the entire citizenry, and corruption. Yes, in our various schools/institutions, the human resources are already there; we’ve efficient, effective and sufficient staff.

Our only problems are inadequate/insufficient infrastructure and teaching equipment. Well equipped laboratories, libraries, workshops and class/lecture rooms should be provided in our various citadel of learning. The primary and secondary schools should not be left out because the educational background of any nation lies in that area. The private institutions should also be mandated to follow suit. Any training/teaching centre(s) is/are expected to be practical oriented, irrespective of its field/line of interest. In addition, our technical colleges ought to be revived. A graduate of any school, regardless of level of the citadel, is meant to boast of a particular talent (skill). The profundity is already obtainable; the hindrance remains the required materials and environment.

Also, the teachers/lecturers should be catered for. Their welfare should remain the government’s priority. Their individual salaries ought to be regularly increased/considered, coupled with their respective promotions. And, other juicy incentives should not be left out. These will definitely help to completely eradicate the high level of corruption in the sector such as sorting, hiring of ‘machineries’ or assistants during exams, and other forms of examination malpractices, as the case may be. Furthermore, the respective offices of the teachers/lecturers deserve to be well furnished and equipped. Let’s begin with the teachers, because, the future and greatness of any society lie in their hands.

In the aspect of the reading habit, all hands are expected to be on deck. Such habit begins from childhood. And, this is where the parents come in. The parents should continually motivate, and as well, mandate their children to read by drawing them closer to text books, novels, newspapers/magazines, and what have you. They should also ensure that the children cultivate the habit of listening to news on radio/television. Above all, they should ensure that, the children in question are always ebullient to enable them participate effectively in the above practices. This is where health comes in. Their ebullience would make them enthusiastic, outgoing and spontaneous.

Brethren, I wish to end my critique with a short story that has to do with the above apathy; lack of reading habit. One fateful day, a certain young man who happened to be present at one of the general meetings of a newly introduced communal organization, which I happen to be the founder/leader, greatly amused me. During the A.O.B section, he stood up to earn his view, and as well, give his remark. After commending the officers, he asked us to put more effort on information dissemination in regard to subsequent meetings; stating that, if not the invitation he received from a friend of his, who happens to be one of us, he wouldn’t had known, or be informed about the meeting. After his lovely comments, the Secretary General raised his eyes and looked, briefly and curiously, at him. Though, it wasn’t pronounced. I tried to find out from the President General (PG), who was presiding over the meeting and as well sitting next to me, the reason for the sudden gesture exhibited by the Sec. Gen. Based on the information I got from the PG, I learnt the notice for the on-going meeting was pasted at the door-step of that very young man. And, the notice lasted for six good days before the meeting took place. Maybe, he took the notice for granted, and never cared to glanced at even a bit of its content. Probably, not even a perusal. Thus, he ignored the notice with impunity. Lack of reading habit in the highest order. So pathetic and disgusting indeed! To be frank; the young man’s eccentric nature denied him his desired respect at the executive desk. Honestly, you needed to see how I was engulfed in a fathomless moment of hatred towards him; though, hidden and brief. In fact, I was totally appalled. Believe me, all the resultant gestures were happening unknowingly to him. But, even if they were pronounced, he deserved it, because he seemed the apotheosis of total ignorance and extreme insouciance.

Please, Nigeria should implement a drastic approach to ensure that, her educational sector that is fast deteriorating and becoming malodorous is totally revived, because, her anticipated greatness lies solely in the area. Don’t forget, the parents are not left out.

I beg to take my usual seven days leave. See you next week on refineries!

Nigerian Health Sector

SCENIC SCENARIOS: THE WAY FORWARD (2)

We are still discussing the avenues that ought to be embraced by the Nigerian government to ensure that, vision 20:20:20 becomes a reality, or to ascertain a developed society. In the previous edition under same topic, we extensively discussed the power sector. This edition shall be discussing the health sector exclusively.

Since my last edition on power, I’ve been receiving series of reactions/opinions, though positive. The most remarkable one was the text message that came from one of the ladies. In her remarks, she said, apart from being a journalist, she feels more comfortable addressing me as an educator. I screwed down to get the full gist. She added that, from her view so far, she observed that, my major interest in journalism is education; stating that, I pay great attention in educating people through my journalistic prowess. She concluded with the clause; “ keep it up! ” Honestly, the lady was right. I believe the best way to educate people is to hide under the umbrella of the media so you can reach out to the entire public; and, this is what I’ve been doing ever since I found myself in journalism. So, this topic, so far so good, is mainly interested in the government, federal govt to be precise. Let’s ride on!

Health is a state in which you’re fit and well. In other words, it’s the condition of one’s body. So, a healthy person/animal is well, therefore, not suffering from any illness. Moreso, if you’re healthy, you could be described as a hearty person. A hearty individual is cheerful and energetic. In a nut shell, if one is hearty, he/she is automatically healthy, and vice-versa.

Frankly speaking, our intimate prognosis will never come to past if this area (health) that deals directly with people’s life or welfare is not adequately and specially considered. Of course, I’m not kidding because it’s a fact. Yes, a fancy fact!

One fateful weekend, saturday precisely, at about nine in the morning (9.00 am), the message tone of my humble handset rang to inform me that an sms just came in. I opened my inbox to find out the content of the message, and as well, who sent it. The sender happened to be one of my best friends; based in Abuja. And the message reads, “ Gud moni FDN,” I’m popularly known by that name/initials (FDN) and that is what most of my bossom friends call me. Sorry for the break in transmission. The sms continues, “...I’m typing this message from a hospital seat, government hospital to be precised. But, the worst of it is that no medical personnel is ready to attend to any patient. According to them, they’re on sit down strike. And I’m seriously ill. My condition requires an urgent diagnosis. Please, what should I do? “ After the perusal, I was deeply touched by the mood of the sms. I quickly dialed his number and luckily for me, the call went through. I asked him to leave the hospital immediately for a private hospital. He responded that, since his adulthood, he had never patronized any private hospital. According to him, their staff are bunch of quacks and he wouldn’t like a quack to take care of him,. To worsen it, he concluded that the laboratory machines of those hospitals are not trustworthy. I wasn’t meant to argue with him; my optimum interest was his health condition. Still on the phone conversation, I let him know that, he had no choice, therefore, must dance to my tune. He saw reason with me and decided to leave for a near-by private hospital. To cut the story short; he was treated in a private hospital, and was discharged that same day.

Brethren, what prompted the above story was the issue of rampant strike or industrial action that takes place in our various government hospitals. If hospitals in any given nation/country continually embark on industrial action(s), then, the lives of the citizenry are at stake, and cannot be guaranteed. It’s a shame! Yes, very shameful and disgusting phenomenon. This simply means, we’re still living in the past; the era of, “ you’re on your own, “ in terms of medical attention. It looks like a mere dream or cock and bull story for one to be informed that, a country like ours that is richly blessed with both human and natural resources is still living in the past.

Believe me, in this country, there’re adequate hands that can put any medical (health) situation to stop. Most of our medical personnel are qualified for this; some of them has even left the country for else-where in search of government that truly (sincerely) appreciates the importance of life or man-power. Brethren, our only problem in the health sector is nothing but inadequate infrastructure and medical facilities, coupled with poor incentives for the personnel.

If I die while preaching this gospel, I’d be happy in the grave because I succeeded in passing the message. Yes, the evangelism has been actualized. But, I shall not die; I shall live to profess His goodness and mercy.

Let’s tell ourselves the truth; total overhaul is required in the Nigerian health sector. Nigeria is old and too rich for this continual experience of tokenism. Yes, most times the medical labourers participate in a strike not because they truly want to be part of it, but because, they were asked or mandated to do so. Most of them believe in watching others fight on their behalf; we shy away from our responsibilities. The government should please save this set of people from this on-going moment of terror.

Let’s begin with the infrastructural phase. The dilapidated structures in the name of hospitals scattered all over the nuks and crannies ought to be automatically renovated. The proprietors of the private hospitals should also be mandated to carry-out such action. A hospital building and environment should be the most decent structure and area respectively in any given country. It’s a place where, by the special grace of God, lives are being saved, so, at all time, should deserve to be given honourable mentions.

And, for the members of, or workers in the various hospitals to be hospitable, they should be cartered for. The government should from time to time pump in incentives to encourage the medical/health workers (staff). Yes, they must look good to be cheerful and accommodating. And, one cannot look good if his/her welfare is at stake. I must confess; the government is trying to the best of my knowledge. But, additional effort is needed to ensure that, more smiles are ascertained in this great nation.

The last, but not the least, our hospitals should be well equipped. Out-dated equipment should be thrown to the bush. Yes, that’s where they belong. An efficient monitoring team should be set-up to ensure that, the private hospitals/clinics follow suit. Adequate and more valid medical machines (devices) should from time to time be imported. Believe me, our industrious engineers can even do the manufacturing if financially supported. And, this shall save us many stress as regards importation. It’s hightime the high-class citizens stopped leaving our noble country for others for the sake of medical check-up or treatment. Rather, they should contribute in reviving our health sector because all hands must be on deck. Even the number one citizen of the country patronizes the hospitals in other nations; what a shame! All these pathetic practices or indulgences are attributed to lack of, or inadequate medical equipment in our various hospitals/clinics.

Brethren, honestly the time to act is now. Don’t forget, bunch of tyros are not required if this must be actualized. And, of course, tyrant should never be found in the picture because we don’t need despotism or tyranny. Mind you, these vicarious pleasures ought to stop immediately.

See you next week for the subsequent edition on education. But, before then, you can send your reactions on this or any of the previous editions. Please, I advise you go by text messages. I promise to get back to you as soon as I receive your sms. Meanwhile, say no to procrastination!

Reviving the Technical colleges

REVIVING THE TECHNICAL TRAINING COLLEGES IN NIGERIA

Regrettably, we generally tend to overvalue money and undervalue art. Honestly my intense feelings over the anomaly are truly sympathetic. Unequivocally, it’s so pathetic that the syndrome has been existing for decades now.

The above paragraph might sound off point to most ears; but it remains the foremost aspect of this edition. In other words, I may decide to quit at this juncture because I’m deeply of the view that the first paragraph has summarily presented and as well analyzed the business of today.

Maybe I’m yet to make a sense to you. The bone of contention is that the abstract of this work has been given. And with the abstract of any work, anyone can make a meaning from it if closely studied. Furthermore, anybody can develop a work of any length in subsequent to the given abstract without the assistance or presence of the progenitor of the original work.

Even a toddler can attest to the fact that science has done wonders and therefore remains impeccable. Science is the only field on earth that understands the language of experiment coupled with practice to the fullness. Experiment is an avenue through which one finds out or prove something. Thus, if one has an idea, it’s only through experiment that he can ascertain the product/result of the idea. Sciences as a discipline has been embracing this routine for centuries now, and it has been working smoothly for it (sciences). Apart from science, any other field/area such as arts can also encourage and indulge in experimental procedures. Experiment does not mean carrying out a certain work in the laboratory; it simply means, unravelling the mystery thereby ascertaining the fact. In a nutshell, it means utilizing a practical approach while in any activity. Generally speaking, any field of study can embrace the scientific methodology which is experiment or practice; and that’s exactly what we see or is being observed in various technical colleges/schools in existence.

Recently, most times I feel like gushing out tears each time I look around and see that Nigeria as a country cannot boast of any befitting government technical college across the federation. Most persons cheer over the syndrome; some laugh over it; some meditate on it; while only few jeer or cries over the nightmare. It beats my utmost imagination to see that some of our so-called leaders are among those who laugh or cheer over the anomaly which I personally tagged as a societal monster. Well, let’s ride on!

I wish to use this medium to make a fact clear to the Nigerian society, that, the country’s technological development cum enhancement shall remain a mirage if the grass-root is not properly addressed. We must endeavour to commence with the rudiments if our dream must yield a genuine product. Take for instance; most of the technical works done in China is being carried out by the school children. And I’m quite sure we’ve not forgotten so soon that barely few years ago China was placed as one of the ‘third-world’ countries in the world alongside with Nigeria. Fortunately today, China is amongst the world’s ruling class as regards science and technology. Unfortunately and pathetically, Nigeria is still topping the list of the third-world countries.

The Nigerian government ought to start now to fund and as well re-establish the dilapidated technical colleges situated in various location across the country. Let’s embrace the era of scientific methodology. It’s better late than never. But I’m afraid, if a drastic and urgent measure is not taken in respect to this canker, Nigeria is liable to be seen as an arena for mere jamboree in near future.

Brethren, every hand must be on deck to ensure that this cause we have embarked on yields a result that would be of global reputation in no distance time. And if the crusade must generate a worthwhile fruit, then we should acknowledge the fact that the starting point or the basis is nothing but sincerity. Yes, we must begin by telling ourselves the gospel truth. Think about it!

My Tribute to Achebe

WHY AUTHORS OUGHT TO BE CONTINUALLY CELEBRATED: MY TRIBUTE TO ACHEBE

Brethren, even if I lack words, the thousands of pens lying in my household would continue to be unhappy if I remain silent. In other words, in most cases, silence could warrant a state of anarchy which may lead to unbearable mayhem or unimaginable massacre. Thus, these incessant fracases being witnessed almost on a daily basis on our roads could be attributable to the increasing rate of silence amongst our apex leaders.

Let’s take it this way. The last time I checked, millions of corpses belonging to various Nigerian citizens were peacefully or disturbingly lying in different morgue situated at strategic points across the federation. On this note, we are expected to realize that among these aforementioned corpses, some deserves to be given a thorough befitting burial to encourage and as well please billions of souls they mentored and left behind. Therefore in such circumstance, some of us who benefitted immensely from the deceased persons are expected not to be silent, rather ought to be chanting dirges coupled with eulogies in order to prove to the Chief mourners that we are also deeply touched by the forbidden departure.

Few days ago, one of my fans called from Orlu in Imo State to find out why she was yet to hear the outcry of my inks in respect to one of the global statesmen that just left the blessed earth. Having appreciated her concern, I sincerely asked her not to be in haste, stating that there’s time for everything. I further disclosed to her that my inks were still in comatose state, therefore lack words.

Beloved, we are discussing authors and why they should be continually celebrated. To start with, an author is a person who writes and compiles books.

You will bear me witness that the world would have remained blind or illiterate provided there is no profession known as writing. I always tell people and would continue to say it that, learning is not all about attending classes; it’s about telling yourself that you ought to know that which you’re yet and meant/bound to know. Summarily, learning can take place anywhere, and anytime. For such fact to be upheld, we must embrace reading. And, it’s no longer news that there’s nothing to be read if there’s nothing written. Thus, the chorus remains no writing, no reading. Q.E.D. In a nut shell, writing begets reading.

If truly that the globe cannot dwell successfully without embracing the writing profession, then what stops us from celebrating those found in such intense intellectual profession? To be frank and candid, writers/authors ought to be seen as God’s most leading messengers, therefore deserve to be regarded as apex celebrities. Honestly, the members of the writing profession are the people who are really liberating the universe from all sorts of bondages. Let’s ride on!

Having stated the fact that authors are global celebrities, I wish to use this avenue to sincerely inform us that some authors supersede others. This is what we call “hierarchy”. Yes, there are writers who are like gods to their fellow writers. And such set of people should not just be celebrated but ought to be immensely adored by all and sundry.

Few weeks ago, Thursday 21st March 2013 precisely, a global literary giant, Prof. Chinua Achebe who happened to be a member of the world’s leading stakeholders’ confraternity kicked the bucket leaving billions of immeasurable footprints behind, and alive too. Chinua Achebe (1930-2013) shot to the global literary stage with the iconic prose, “Things fall apart” in 1958. Presently his remains are peacefully lying in a morgue.

Sir, silver nor gold I’ve none, but I sincerely promise you that by His grace, my unborn great grand children shall live to chant eulogies in regard to your past worthwhile existence. And I shall live to proclaim the good gospel on the fathomless contributions you recorded towards the growth of mankind. I would have loved to financially contribute my quota as regards your forthcoming befitting burial.

Brethren, if I’m granted the room to earn my view in respect to the Late Professor Chinua Achebe’s forthcoming burial, I would say that the deceased deserves to be buried in a gold tomb. Mind you, I said “gold tomb” not golden tomb. Think about it!

Water & its Importance

WATER AND ITS SOCIETAL IMPORTANCE

Brethren, many people seem bemused at the choices facing them. And as a humanitarian, I bemoan such phenomenon because it signifies that we shy away from Economics. In Economics as a subject, social science to be precise, we were taught scale of preference. Scale of preference is that tool or mechanism that enables mankind to arrange his/her wants in order of importance. And this is where choice comes in.

Every living and reasonable soul is bound to make a choice. And if you are being faced with thousands of them (choices), you should be able to pick the most important. This is where your scale of preference comes in. For some of us in arts, you may not have been privileged to pass through Economics. But the fact remains that every created soul is gifted with the ability to make choice. Thus, the knowledge of scale of preference is naturally inculcated in us. Yes, it’s natural; not by our making.

In Biology which is a core subject (not elective), science precisely, we were taught that there’re six classes of food in existence, or that are available for human consumption. Among these six classes of food, there must be one that is more important than others. Or in other words, there ought to be one that is most important amongst them.

On the other hand, in Physics or Chemistry which is also a pure science, we were taught that matter is of three states; or that there are three (3) states of matter which are solid, liquid and gas. We were also taught that matter is anything that has weight and occupies space. Among the aforementioned states/classes of matter, there’s one that is of most important to the human body, and also to human existence generally. It’s not just scientific but natural. I’m sure you’ve not forgotten that science is nature. And nature is the supremacy. Let’s ride on!

If you can recollect our topic for today, you will vividly tell me that we’re discussing water and its societal importance. We must begin with a definition so that no one would be lost or missing.

According to BBC English dictionary, “Water is a clear, colourless liquid that has no taste or smell and that is necessary for the survival of all plant and animal life”. From my humble perspective, in a nut shell, water is the centre of all clarity and the input of all worthwhile end-points. Let’s analyze! I will not be ponderous in my analysis, though I shall be frank.

A renowned Nigerian musician, Fela Anikulapokuti of the blessed memory, once sang “Water no get enemy” which he went further to inform his listeners/fans that whatever one does on earth, he/she must need water. Beloved, truly water has no enemy; every man and animal on earth requires water for his/its daily strides, and most importantly, for survival. The example was shown by the “Almighty” through His son Jesus Christ; having fasted for forty days and forty nights, the first thing Christ sought for was water. Is of no need to cite more similar instances that took place in the past because we have thousands of them.

Let’s start with the economic sector. Electrical power or electricity which remains the most fundamental aspect of any socio-economic growth or development is being generated from water. For those of us in sciences, Physics taught us that. And it’s a fact. We have other economic importance of water too numerous to mention.

Let’s venture into the health wing. In a concise sentence, water is life. In an Igbo idiomatic expression, it reads “mmiri bu ndu”. Considering the six classes of food, we can discuss extensively on the health importance of water. Take for instance, for a whole day, one can dwell without the other five classes of food which are protein, carbohydrate, fat and oil, vitamins, and minerals but he can never forfeit water which is one of the classes of food for the day. Even while taking/consuming any of the other classes listed above, health wise, it is advisable to accompany it with water. See your doctor if you have one for further explanation.

Then physical wise. Taking an athlete or a sports participant as a case study, you will find out that none of the aforementioned persons can perform adequately without water. But he/she can perform without the intake of the other forms of food. Even in the laboratory for those of us in sciences, in most cases we find out that almost all the substances require water when being used for a certain chemical reaction. In Chemistry, this is what we refer to as dilution or concentration of a substance. Please see a chemist for more light to be thrown.

The last but not the least, in our various domestic activities or affairs, we adore water as if it’s our life. And truly, it is our life. Please don’t get me wrong because water is all over me.

Generally, liquid substances are of more economic and social importance than the other states of matter which are solids and gases; and water belongs to this class/state known as liquid. Thus, going by the above critique, we will agree that water is the most important liquid substance on earth.

Above all, in this case, the choice remains that water must come first before any other form/sort of food in existence. Think about it!

Unpatriotic Syndrome

UNPATRIOTIC SYNDROME AMONGST NIGERIANS

Brethren, pardon me; I wish to begin with loyalty. From my humble perspective, loyalty is one’s firmness in his/her friendship or support for someone/something. In other words, loyalties are feelings of friendship, support, or duty. I put it up to you that you can never be loyal to any body/thing if you don’t truly love him/it. Thus, love begets loyalty, or loyalty is a product or one of the products of love.

Let’s have it this way; loyalty signifies obedience or respect. And respect can never stand or generate if there is no love. Most times people believe that respect should only be discharged by the younger, junior, subject, or servant as the case may be. But it’s a big lie or wrong conviction because respect is reciprocal as it’s popularly cited. Sorry for that digression, though it was necessary. But, the sole purpose of this paragraph is to inform you that respect which signifies loyalty can never hold in any love-free society.

Then at this juncture, we are expected to ask ourselves, what is love? Few seconds before I started writing this edition, I received a commercial sms on my phone from Airtel network which the first sentence reads, “Love is just love, it can never be explained”. After the perusal, I welcomed the sms with a huge smile. But my question is, does the message really make sense? And if a privilege ought to be granted to me to give the exact answer to that question, I’ll answer Yes and No. It’s not a paradox. It’s a fact. The Yes part of it is that truly, love is just love; there’s no two ways about it. There’s only one finite/basic definition of love. And such definition holds in any recognized dictionary and the holy books. You only say you love someone/something when his/its happiness/existence is very important or matters so much to you. It’s only in philosophy that you can find different definitions or types of love. But I wish to utilize this opportunity to inform you that there’s no different types of love such as agape, eros or philia as its being cited in philosophy. Love is just love. You can only find different kinds/types of lust. Secondly, the No part/side of the above answer is that love can be explained instead of how it was stated in the sms that it can never be explained. Beloved, love is never complicated; it’s a very simple term that everyone is bound to comprehend irrespective of his/her age or status especially in this moment of love popularly known as “Valentine”.

We’re discussing unpatriotism among Nigerians. Patriotism is one’s love or loyalty for his/her country. In other words, unpatriotism is your hatred for your country. Q.E.D. It’s so pathetic to see millions of people parading with an unsympathetic character due to absolute ignorance. This time, kindly permit me to speak in a high voice because personally, I’m boiling.

Penultimate two Sundays, 10th of February to be precise during the AFCON finals that took place between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Stallions of Burkina Faso which I was viewing in my apartment at Owerri, one of my neighbours who happened to sit beside me exclaimed, “After all I’ll still have my dinner even if Nigeria is being defeated” having heard other viewers lamenting over the non-challant attitude of some players. You needed to see how I glanced at him with pronounced cruelty. Tell me, what does food got to do with one seeing his/her country emerging the winner of the day; wasn’t that statement crazy? Apart from similar lackadaisical attitudes display by most Nigerians in their everyday lives, some still go a long way cursing or wishing the country bad luck whenever she intends embarking on any competition with other nation(s). What is actually wrong with us; have we grown banana or something? Let me not conclude that this is insanity because God is watching.

It doesn’t even stop at that. The issue of laying more emphasis or interest on foreign made goods than the locally made ones is fast becoming a pain in the ass. The level of patronage of virtually all Nigerians towards the indigenous goods/commodities is no longer sad but extremely disgusting and alarming. How can one loves his/her fellow than him/herself. Pathetic indeed! Yes, such gesture is a product of low mentality. I’m sincerely sorry to say it. Even the holy book asks us to love our neighbours as ourselves, and not than ourselves. I must tell you, we’re seriously derailing.

Honestly, no one is exceptional or exempted here because we all are in one way or the other filled with either a drop or huge amount of this destructive and unproductive blood. Frankly speaking, unpatriotism is wholesomely destructive. And the last time I checked, any destructive syndrome is definitely unproductive.

Brethren, why can’t we be loyal to our country of origin; a country we find ourselves or were born in; a country whose blood flows in our respective veins. Every member of this nation, be it by origin, birth, adoption or affiliation is expected to adore or respect the nation, rather than spitting at her. When shall we wake-up from this long lasted siesta? Yes, a word is enough, but only for the wise. Maybe our problem is lack of wisdom. I know as a country abundantly and richly blessed with both natural and human resources, we’re expected to grow faster and larger than our present socio-economic and political status; but that shouldn’t call for sadism, rather fellowship. Think about it!

Meanwhile, congratulations Super Eagles; you have really flew to the peak, and therefore have made the patriotic ones proud. You all deserve the national honours granted to you. Bravo!!

Effects of technology

THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY

Brethren, it’s no longer news that everyone dreams to remain happy. But don’t forget, the consistent cheerfulness of a certain lively couple could result to the sad mood of another married couple. In other words, we all wish or are working tirelessly to encounter treasure. But we shouldn’t forget to acknowledge the fact that every treasure has a certain negative consequence including water which I personally tag as an unending treasure.

Sometime ago, one of my closest neighbours at my place of residence got punched in the face by a pugnacious apprentice during one of his usual trips to warri, Delta State in Nigeria. Since then, the man has been suffering from paranoia in such a manner that everyone around him could easily notice the abnormality. What transpired between him and the trainee is something we shouldn’t bother to know because it could also introduce paranoia in our individual minds if being disclosed. Recently I called the man in question and gave him some panacea, and also urged him to forge ahead without further panic. I summarized my meeting with him with the philosophy that life without challenges can never grow formidably. He saw reason with me thereby promised to always accept his challenges in good faith.

Our topic for today is; the socio-economic effects of technology. In some of my previous editions in the past on this column, I’ve taken time to discuss science and technology as it relates to several areas of life. Summarily in the editions, I categorically stated that science has done novel. And, it’s no longer news to any of us that we are in the world of science. Yes, science has dominated the universe through its worthwhile idiosyncrasies. But in this edition, we shall be considering both the positive and negative impacts of sciences on the world at large as it affects the socio-economic sector.

Tremendously science and technology has contributed immensely in the socio-economic area of the globe. To start with; it is by means of science that two or more persons can reach or speak with each other at any distance. It’s also the sole effort of technology that enables one to be exposed even in his/her room or apartment. In other words, one doesn’t necessarily need to travel or go out before he/she can be exposed or well informed. And such routine could be possible or ascertained through what is generally known as “global village”. A global village is the ability of one to access or have access to the entire world from any environment/position by the means of scientific equipment at his/her reach. Above all, science has made virtually everything in existence to be easily manipulated, reformed and more importantly, re-created. Such phenomenon can be observed in the areas of medical sciences, engineering, environmental/management sciences and what have you.

But without mixing words, I also wish to use this medium to inform you that science has created a very serious vacuum in any given society. If I must analyze, then I should tell you that science and technology has greatly deteriorated the morality level of any society through the means of video gadget, telephone, computer, just to mention a few. On the other hand, technology has also diminished or terminated the life-span of billions of individuals both in the past and present through industrial/laboratory pollution and hazards, automobile accident, food preservatives, fire outbreaks and so on.

We are not meant to panic, rather what we should be asking ourselves is this; amongst the merits and demerits of technology, which one supersedes? Because, anything taking place under the sun must have both aforementioned phenomena; merits and demerits. And, if I would be granted the room to view my opinion, then I’m bound to tell you that the merits of science greatly supersedes the demerits because without it (science), we would have remained blind which would have caused a greater doom to mankind. So, the demerits are the challenges we must accept in good faith. Think about it!

The Ongoing Massive Road Construction

THE ONGOING MASSIVE ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN IMO STATE: AN AVENUE FOR FLYOVERS AND TRAFFIC LIGHTS

If I find myself in a magnificent and ostentatious palace, I will continue to smile ostentatiously. More so, if at any of the forthcoming nights, I end up dreaming of seeing myself in heaven, then there ought to be no cause for any sort of alarm that may occur knowingly or unknowingly. In other words, there is no existing soul that doesn’t pray tirelessly to attain to the peak, or to find him/herself in an extreme euphoric point. And if peradventure you eventually find yourself at such anticipatory moment, then definitely your voice/tongue shall be filled with fathomless eulogies and apparently, your face shall follow suit by showcasing unquantifiable smiles.

Let’s relocate to this angle. Take for instance; if everyone prays to see his/her State of origin as a paradise. And at a point or in the long run, a picture which appears like a paradise showcases in such State, won’t you have it in mind that truly such intense prayers are about to be answered or have been answered, as the case may be? If truly that the participants in such prayers happen to see the aforementioned picture as a sign of the presence of a Messiah, then the participants and their well wishers would not hesitate or seize to generate and as well regenerate immeasurable smiles on their respective faces. Significantly, such unusual idiosyncrasy would be accompanied with steady songs of praises.

Some weeks ago, a friend and colleague who resides in Lagos State called to enquire on some alleged facts as regards Imo State that weren’t so clear to him, based on the ongoing news which he has been receiving from different quarters. He said that some persons had been saying that there were tremendous improvements in Imo State, whilst some on the other hand were saying that the present administration of the State lacked good governance thereby referring its subjects as dupes. He further told me that such speculations had ushered in a point of paradox in his mindset therefore he couldn’t make any meaning out of it. From my candid response, I told him that presently Imo State has changed for good and that, that should be of paramount importance to any well meaning Imo indigene/resident or any crusader of positive change. I subsequently told him that I had no interest in any sort of rumour I receive; stating that as an analyst, my major interest lies in what I see taking place in the State, rather than what I hear.

Brethren, our discussion for today lies on the massive road construction in Imo State and the need to accompany such project with installation of flyovers and traffic lights. Honestly, I can’t remember vividly how many times I have written and as well published on the unavoidable importance of traffic lights and flyovers on our roads. The past administration in the State was erecting something or a project that appeared to agree with this my humble opinion but regrettably such project was not accomplished / actualized. Could that be a mirage? Well, let’s ride on!

Traffic lights and flyovers are means through which traffic problems are being restricted or avoided. In other words, they are instruments that are used to fight traffic crimes or aberrations on the roads which they are situated. Traffic lights are usually found either on cross junctions or T-junctions while flyovers are mainly found on cross junctions. The former, as programmed digital equipment, instructs commuters on when to pass in or cross to a particular direction while the latter enables commuters to operate both on and above the road level because it’s a structure which carries one road above another thereby creating sanity on the roads and allowing enough space for the pedestrians. In some cases or corners, the flyovers are being constructed for only the pedestrians.

If properly checked, most of the road accidents recorded in the past was due to lack of the above tools on any of the roads where such incident occurred. Kindly indulge in a thorough research both in Nigeria and beyond; and you will ascertain that the junctions where the aforementioned tools are installed / constructed witness none or less traffic congestions on a daily basis.

As massive road construction is presently taking place at strategic points in Imo State, there’s an urgent need for the pragmatic administrators initiating such feasible projects to acknowledge the socio-economic efficacy of traffic lights and flyovers so that the users of the roads in question would continue to say that truly the Messiah has come. Please we should endeavour to do this thing right so everyone would feel our presence and indomitable impact.

Brethren, it’s no longer news that Imo has gotten a new look and that the present administration led by Chief Rochas Okorocha is striding relentlessly to ensure that Imo State becomes a paradise. Yes, I ought to be seen as a myopic observer if I fail to acknowledge this fact because even the blind could see that Imo has indeed drastically become a better place to be. But I must tell you this; if the best which we all are anticipating must come, then we shouldn’t embrace any time for siesta or even a nap because working round the clock is the best way to actualize a tangible object/goal. Think about it!
