Chelsea Winger, Mudryk Suspended Over Positive Drug Test

By Rufus Okoro
The Winger of the Chelsea Football Club (FC), Mykhailo Mudryk has been henceforth provisionally suspended from all football activities, having tested positive over drug tests.

The Ukraine international has not featured for the Blues since November 28, 2024, when he scored in a Europa Conference League win over Heidenheim. His prolonged absence had initially been attributed to illness, but was eventually revealed that he failed a doping test and is unavailable to the Head Coach, Enzo Maresca.

According to The Athletic, Mudryk tested positive for Meldonium, a medication typically used to treat heart conditions such as angina, after the November international break. Meldonium can reportedly assist with endurance and recovery for athletes.

A statement on the Blues’ official website reads: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm the Football Association recently contacted our player Mykhailo Mudryk concerning an adverse finding in a routine urine test.

“Both the Club and Mykhailo fully support The FA’s testing programme and all our players, including Mykhailo, are regularly tested. Mykhailo has confirmed categorically that he has never knowingly used any banned substances. Both Mykhailo and the Club will now work with the relevant authorities to establish what has caused the adverse finding.”

Mudryk has responded to the news by posting on social media, “I can confirm that I have been notified that a sample I provided to The FA contained a banned substance. “This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules, and am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened. I know that I have not done anything wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the pitch soon. I cannot say any more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will as soon as I can.”

Mudryk joined Chelsea for £89 million ($113m) in January 2023, signing an eight-year contract, and has thus far taken in 73 appearances for the club, scoring a total of 10 goals. He maintains that his personal routine has not changed since passing a banned substance test in August.

However, FA regulations dictate that a player could be "provisionally suspended" after posting a positive test, as they are given an opportunity to explain themselves. Mudryk is now waiting on the results of a ‘B’ sample as he continues to cooperate fully with all of the relevant parties involved in the case.

ECOWAS Approves January 2025 for Exit of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso

By Kings Olajide
The Authority of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved January 29, 2025, to July 29, 2025, as a transitional period for Mali, Niger Republic, and Burkina Faso from the regional bloc.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray made this known while reading the communique at the end of the 66th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja on Sunday, December 15, 2024.

Dr. Touray, a Gambian diplomat, said the authority had taken note of the notification by the three countries on their decision to withdraw from the ECOWAS.

He disclosed that the bloc Authority acknowledged that in accordance with the provisions of Article 91 of the revised ECOWAS treaty, the three countries would officially cease to be members from January 29, 2025.

He stated: “In this regard, the Authority extends the mandate of President Gnassingbe of Togo, and President Faye of Senegal to continue their mediation rule up to the end of the transition period to bring the three member countries back to ECOWAS.

“Without prejudice, for the spirit of the opening, the Authority directs the President of the Commission to launch withdrawal formalities after the deadline of January 29, 2025, and to draw up a contingency plan covering various areas.

“The Authority directs the Council of Ministers to convene an extraordinary session during the second quarter of 2025 to consider and adopt both separation modalities and the contingency plan covering political and economic relations between ECOWAS and the Republic of Niger, the Republic of Mali, and Burkina Faso.”

Dr. Touray further notified that the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government commended the diplomatic engagement of Senegal’s President, Bassirou Faye, and President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe.

He said the authority also commended the diplomatic efforts of the ECOWAS Chairman, Chief Bola Tinubu, and other individual member states towards the three countries.

#Fiction: BRIDAL DECEIT

By Fred Nwaozor
Mr. Chike Okafor was still waiting patiently for Adanma’s arrival right in his humble abode. Only the blind would be yet to observe that the poor man was almost losing his patience.

“Where on earth could this woman be?” He thought aloud, deeply concerned over her welfare. “I pray nothing bad had happened to her.” He added, still looking pale in one of the upholstery chairs in his sitting room.

Chike’s loss of patience, which was accompanied by series of soliloquies, came in consequence to several aborted efforts he had made to reach the awaited lady on phone.

Adanma was his fiancée, and their church wedding ceremony had been scheduled to take place in two weeks time.

He came across her in Calabar, the capital city of Cross-River State, Nigeria barely four months back. They were both residents of the said city and incidentally hailed from neighbouring states, Enugu and Anambra, respectively.

Their relationship commenced jokily during one fateful weekend, Saturday, 24th August 2013 precisely, when Chike drove to one of the hottest joints in the metropolis to have some drinks in his not unusual style.

Having parked his Red Toyota Camry car at the designated spot, the moment he walked into the bar, he abruptly caught the sight of one light-skinned, about 5.6-foot tall and plump pretty damsel clad in a blue mini-skirt, pink top and a pair of pink sandals seated alone at one of the corners in the area. She was already sipping from a bottle of Smirnoff which was accompanied with a plate of pepper soup.

Amazingly, within a twinkle of an eye, she saw a slim, chocolate-skinned and about 5.5-foot tall dude who seemed to be in his late thirties standing right before her. He was putting on a pair of brownish three-quarter jeans, green T-shirt and a pair of brown leather slippers, coupled with a greenish baseball cap.

“Hi!” He exclaimed cheerfully.

“Hello!” the lady, whom seemed to be in her early thirties, responded accordingly.

“I am Chike,” he rightly informed. “Chike Okafor.” He added, still standing.

“Okay, Adanma.” She pleasantly uttered, placing her left palm on her chest.

“Are you waiting for someone?”
“Not at all.”

“Can I join you?” the dude requested.

“Suit yourself.” She replied in a very friendly manner.

Chike joyfully sat on the white plastic seat positioned directly opposite her. “You are really beautiful; I must confess.” He swiftly dished out.

“Thanks.” She gladly appreciated.

He didn’t hesitate to order for his own drink, bottle of lager beer to be precise, coupled with a plate of pepper soup to balance the equation.

The conversation lasted for over one hour after exchange of several pleasantries including phone numbers and what have you. After all said and done, Chike happily dropped Adanma at her place of residence at about 6:45pm (WAT).

Exactly two months after their first meeting, they got engaged. On the third month, Chike joyfully took his kinsmen to Anambra State to pay her bride price.

According to Chike’s religious doctrine alongside that of his family, he was not meant to live with her after observing the traditional marriage rite until he had successfully taken her to the altar.

That very fateful day, which marked exactly two weeks to their wedding, Chike was anxiously waiting for Adanma’s arrival because she was already two hours behind schedule.

Both of them had earlier agreed to meet on that day at his place by four O’clock in the afternoon in regard to the proceedings of their forthcoming wedding ceremony. But as at 6:10pm (WAT), Adanma was yet to arrive. The young man tried for the umpteenth time to reach her on phone, all to no avail.

Having dosed off on the upholstery seat at his sitting room, at about two minutes past seven at night, Chike’s door bell rang.

On receipt of the blaring sound of the bell, the gentle man walked reluctantly to the door. “Who’s that?” He inquired in a low tone.

“It’s me, Adanma.”
As soon as the name ‘Adanma’ was mentioned, the door was widely let open.
“Baby, are you okay?” Chike worriedly asked. “I have been trying your line but it was switched off.”

Adanma, speechless, seemed tired and exhausted. She quietly walked to one of the seats in the living room and lousily sat on it, looking pale.

Chike followed suit having closed the door; he was seated adjacent to her. “Baby talk to me,” he tenderly urged. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Honey, I had a very busy day.” She eventually responded. “I worked overtime in the office today.” She lied.

Adanma had falsely informed Chike that she worked in one of the telecommunication firms in the city. Chike, having trusted her, never cared to go for further enquiries on what she actually did for a living.

“Oh, so sorry about that.” The dude uttered. “That’s company work for you. They will stress you, exploit you, and at the end, you would be paid peanut.” He supplemented.

“Yes, you are absolutely right.” Adanma complimented. “I wish I am a civil servant like you.”

Mr. Chike Okafor whom was a graduate of Business Administration from the University of Port-Harcourt, was a successful civil servant. He was engaged with the Cross-River State Ministry of Finance. Whilst, Adanma was a drop-out from one of the Polytechnics in Nigeria, but lied to Chike that she had a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Marketing.

On that very day, she passed her night at Chike’s lodge and left for her place the following day.

Three days on, which was barely eleven days to the proposed wedding ceremony, after office time, Chike was slowly driving along one of the busy streets in Calabar metropolis to purchase some fruits as usual, for himself as well as his fiancée at about some minutes past five in the evening. Surprisingly, he noticed someone who appeared like Adanma, and the lady in question was walking into a certain brothel situated along the street. He quickly applied the brake and hurriedly walked out.

On reaching the main entrance to the brothel, he saw a life image that gave him the greatest shock in his lifetime. Frankly, the lady he saw while in his car was really Adanma and no one else. This time, she was facing him, though from afar. She was almost nude.

It was conspicuously a very terrible, unimaginable and indelible scene to behold. Little did Chike know that his so-called bride-to-be had been a whore in disguise all those while.

He couldn’t believe his sight. It was like a dream. He stood still, seemed froze. On her part, virtually the entire face was covered with fathomless tears while standing like an electrocuted vulture.

The horrible scene reportedly marked the end of the well nurtured three-month long relationship that would have unfortunately resulted in matrimony.
