Miss Nmesoma, who penciled the motivational story on her Facebook account, stated she grew up under the care of her aunt having left her parents and four siblings at a tender age of seven.
Her story is as given below:
"I sponsored my school from 100 level till 400 level but I had an option not to.
At 7 years old, I had to go live with my aunty because I had four siblings and it was becoming quite difficult for my parents to give us all the best quality of life due to financial constraints.
I lived with my aunty for 10 years, taking care of her home and her kids. Throughout the 10 years' period I lived with her, she took care of my academic bills. But after secondary school was when it took a twist.
After secondary school the next area of education I needed to face was tertiary education, but I didn’t know what I wanted to study, Which was weird. Growing up, if you asked me "Nmesoma what do you want to become in future” my reply would be a doctor, but I didn’t want that anymore.
My aunty kept asking me to think about what I want to study but I just didn’t know, I knew I wanted to work in the medical field but my heart didn’t just go for any of the options I was given.
But because my aunty was a medical doctor by profession, she advised me that the best choice for me would be nursing, but I was never excited about it and I knew deep down I didn’t want to be a nurse.
I had no choice but to apply for nursing in every single JAMB form I filled ( I wrote jamb twice). But eventually I got admission to study Public Health, a course I genuinely didn’t know about.
I broke the news to my aunty and I could tell she wasn’t happy about it, she tried every means to make me see that nursing was a better option than public health, but me on the other hand I genuinely didn’t want to study Nursing ( if I did, it would be to please my aunty and family not myself).
After every means of making me see that nursing was a better option came to no avail of me changing my mind, she gave me one final option; go to college of nursing or study public health and switch to nursing in 200 level.
I chose option 2 ( study public health and switch in 200 level) but I didn’t switch in 200 level. The time to go to school came, my aunty paid my 100 level acceptance fee, school fees and hostel fees. But I didn’t know that would be the last time someone would pay those fees for me.
The moment I left my aunty’s home for school, I became the one in charge of my school fees. It was new to me because honestly I had never taken such responsibility in my life.
I paid every other fees that came with 100 level by myself (feeding, textbooks, department dues, projects and tests, transportation etc); and in 200 level, I took up from where my aunty left and began paying my school fees till now 400 level.
I genuinely appreciate my aunty for taking good care of me for 10 years, it is not easy to take care of your own child talk more of 3 of them and someone else’s child for 10 good years.
God will continue to reward my aunty abundantly for being so loving and kind to take me in and take care of my school, feeding and wellbeing for 10 years.
But just like some of you are wondering now, I’m also wondering too.
If I had stayed back and studied what my aunty wanted me to study or switched to nursing in 200 level, would I have been the one to sponsor my education till my final year?
This is not fictional. This is my story.
