POLITICS: Brazil Elects Bolsonaro as President

The far-right Brazilian congressman, Mr. Jair Bolsonaro emerged the Brazil's new president after a keenly contested polls held on Sunday, 28th October 2018.

Overwhelmed supporters of the Brazil's president-elect, Mr. Bolsonaro took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday after the far-right congressman was declared the winner of the country's presidential election by a wide margin.
Bolsonaro's victory caps ones of the most polarizing and violent political campaigns in Brazil's history, amid a prolonged recession, rising crime rates and widespread corruption scandals.

In a victory speech Sunday, Bolsonaro said he was a "defender of freedom" who would run a government that protected citizens who "follow their duties and respect the laws."

"The laws are for everyone, this is how it will be during our constitutional and democratic government," he stated.

Bolsonaro was declared the winner by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal after 94% of the votes were counted, easily defeating his leftist, ex-Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad.

Supporters of the far-right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro celebrated in front of his house in Rio de Janeiro on October 28.

The electoral tribunal released early results showing Bolsonaro leading with 55.54% of votes to Haddad's 44.46%, a difference larger than the amount of votes left to be counted.

But while Bolsonaro's supporters were rejoicing on Sunday, opponents voiced concerns that his victory could threaten human rights and ecological preservation in the world's fourth largest democracy.

Speaking earlier in the day, Haddad said Brazil's democracy was "at stake" in Sunday's vote. "I believe today is a great day for the country which has arrived at a crossroads," he said.

Troubled over Bolsonaro's promises to open up tracks of the Amazon rainforest to development, environmental groups warned his election would be a "profound setback."

"His reckless plans to industrialize the Amazon in concert with Brazilian and international agribusiness and mining sectors will bring untold destruction to the planet's largest rainforest and the communities who call it home, and spell disaster for the global climate," Amazon Watch program director Christian Poirier opined to newsmen.

Politically motivated violence
Bolsonaro won the first round of the elections in October amid a field of 13 candidates, but he fell short of the 50% needed to win outright and avoid a runoff against Haddad, from the Workers' Party.
"This has been an unprecedented election," said Marco Antonio Teixeira, a political science professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation. "The rhetoric used by both candidates throughout the campaign has been extremely aggressive."

That hostility has carried over into the streets. Dozens of politically motivated acts of violence have been registered by voters, journalist and politicians.

Bolsonaro, 63, was stabbed in the stomach last month during a rally in the city of Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais state. When he went to cast his ballot on Sunday, the congressman wore body armor and arrived by the back entrance.

The stabbing took him off the campaign trail for weeks as he recovered. But it strengthened his position among Brazilians looking for a change.
Bolsonaro's increased visibility prompted a social media backlash known as #elenao, or #nothim, which gained support throughout the country and internationally.

During his Brazil tour, Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters exhibited the slogan on stage in neon lights and chanted "ele nao" with the crowd.
Protesters have also taken the chant to the streets during a recent "Women Against Bolsonaro march" in Sao Paulo.

"Bolsonaro has opened a Pandora box," protest organizer Luka Franca said. "He's given a voice to an ultra right population who want to voice their prejudice and annihilate anyone who is different."

Ugly rhetoric
Bolsonaro, who has been compared to US President Donald Trump and Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, has stirred controversy by making misogynistic, racist and homophobic remarks.
He once told a congresswoman that she did not deserve to be raped because she was "very ugly," Brazil's TV Globo reported.
He also said publicly he'd prefer to see his son "die in an accident" than a member of his family be homosexual.
"This negative discourse he's spreading is killing people," Felipe Lago, a 29-year-old fashion producer told CNN. "If he wins, who knows what will happen to us?"
A banner promoting Workers' Party presidential candidate Fernando Haddad during a rally in Brasilia.
Lago created an Instagram account called "elenaovaoinosmatar," or "he won't kill us" in English, shortly after being verbally assaulted and threatened by a group of Bolsonaro supporters for being gay.
"Although I was scared, I decided to post what happened to me on Facebook," Lago said. "I got a lot of responses from friends and others saying the same thing happened to them."
His Instagram account has more than 100,000 followers and includes videos of others who say they experienced similar assaults.
In their final days on the campaign trail, both Bolsonaro and Haddad asked their supporters not to engage in violence.
Keeping out the Workers' Party
For some Brazilians, like teacher Alexandre Vastella, voting for Bolsonaro was more about keeping the Workers' Party (PT) out of office.

"I want Bolsonaro to be President, not because he's the ideal person, but because we can't risk letting the PT back in power," Vastella told newsmen. "Sure, all of the major parties are corrupt but the PT created an infrastructure of corruption."

The Workers' Party governed Brazil for more than 13 years under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, from 2003 to 2011, and his successor Dilma Rousseff, from 2011 to 2016.

Lula, as he is popularly known, left office with a 83% approval rating, after his policies helped lift millions of Brazilians out of poverty.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Fast Facts

Many politicians, including Lula, were caught in a wide-ranging, 4-year anti-graft probe known as "Operation Car Wash." He was arrested in April 2018  and given a 12-year sentence for corruption and money laundering.

Despite the arrest, Lula was running for a third term and leading in the polls until he was barred from running by the country's top electoral court in September. His running mate, Haddad, replaced him on the ballot and became his party's default candidate.

Voting is compulsory in Brazil, but some undecided voters, like Sao Paulo resident Mauricio Soares, had chosen to vote null or blank.

"The decision of voting null came after a lot of thought and I am firm in my decision," Soares told CNN. "I am not neutral. I am positioning myself against both candidates."

Teixeira, the professor, said the winner must bridge the divide caused by the campaign.

"If the next president only governs for his supporters, the divisiveness we're living will remain. If he chooses to govern for the whole country, there is a greater chance these conflicts will be minimized or disappear," Teixeira said.

POLITICS: Higgins Reemerges as Irish President for Second Term

Mr. Michael D. Higgins has been re-elected as Irish president for a second term after receiving 56% of the country's election votes. His reemergence was confirmed on Sunday, 28th October 2018.

The revered businessman, Mr. Peter Casey came second with 23.1%, while none of the other four candidates polled more than 10%.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said she was "disappointed", but felt it was wrong for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to "sit on the sidelines" in the election.

"I am not sorry that we had an election - I think it was wrong for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to sit on the sidelines," Ms McDonald told the BBC's Sunday Politics programme.
"We decided to challenge in the election - the other parties didn't."

She added: "I think my leadership would have rightly been called into question if I fell in line with Micheál Martin and Leo Varadkar.

"Of course I'm disappointed. I would have liked a better showing for Liadh [Ni Riada]but that was not to be.

"You learn from every contest. You learn from every encounter that you have with the electorate and we'll certainly learn from this."

Mr. Higgins, the first incumbent in 50 years to face a challenge in his bid for a second term, controversially won with 822,566 votes. "We can achieve so much together." The victor announced immediately after the results were released..

Londonderry businessman, Mr. Casey took significantly more votes than the final opinion polls of the campaign had predicted. His final tally was 342,727.
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ni Riada got 93,987 votes - 6.4% of the total votes polled.

Irish Presidential Election result

Valid votes cast: 1,473,900
  • Michael D Higgins 822,566
  • Peter Casey 342,727
  • Seán Gallagher 94,514
  • Liadh Ní Riada 93,987
  • Joan Freeman 87,908
  • Gavin Duffy 32,198
The result was confirmed at a declaration at Dublin Castle in the evening of Saturday, 27th October 2018.

Speaking after his win, Mr. Higgins said he accepted his mandate with "humility, determination and excitement".

"People are interested in ideas that are sincere and constructive," he said.
"For words matter, words can hurt, words can heal, words can empower, words can divide.
"And the words and ideas I have used in this campaign reflect a vision for Ireland based on four strands.

"Equal and together, strong sustainable communities, sharing history - shaping the future and Ireland's voice matters."

Taking to the podium after Mr Higgins, second-placed Mr Casey said the last time he had stood in an election to the Irish Senate he got just 14 votes.

"Somebody worked it out there - it's about 23,000 per cent improvement," he joked.
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ni Riada said she hoped it was the last Irish presidential election in which people in Northern Ireland could not vote.

Low turnout

Turnout was reportedly low in many areas of the country.

More than 3.2 million people were eligible to cast their ballots in the election and referendum.
Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar congratulated Mr Higgins on his predicted win on Saturday morning.

The president is Ireland's "first citizen", but has limited power - the role is mainly symbolic and he or she cannot get involved in daily politics.

Voters received two ballot papers at polling stations on Friday.

They were given a white ballot paper for the presidential election and a green ballot paper for the referendum on blasphemy.

Many were unaware there was such an offence until a member of the public referred controversial remarks made by the actor and writer Stephen Fry on an RTÉ programme to gardai (Irish police).
The investigation was dropped last year, reportedly because officers could not find anyone who was offended.

BREAKING: Tony Anenih Passes On @85

The elder and famous statesman Chief Tony Anenih has passed on after a brief illness on Sunday, 28th October 2018, according to the family.

Chief Anenih died Sunday afternoon at Cedarcrest Hospital Abuja. He was 85 years old.

The deceased family released a statement praising the retired police officer and politician, saying he served “God and humanity with commitment.”
The statement, which was signed by Tony Anenih Jr, said the late octogenarian “enjoyed God’s uncommon grace while alive.”

In a reaction to the eternal loss, the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives Mr. Yakubu Dogara who released a statement as signed by his media personnel, Turaki Hassan, described Chief Anenih as “great mobiliser and a reputable nationalist who, all through his life, believed in, worked and prompted peace and unity in Nigeria.”

“We have lost a father, counsellor, leader par excellence and a patriot who gave his all for the unity of this country.

“He was a distinguished and exemplary officer while he served in the Nigerian Police until his retirement as Deputy Commissioner of Police.”

The speaker said Mr Anenih “played politics without bitterness right from the days of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, NPN in the second republic to the then Social Democratic Party, SDP and later the People’s Democratic Party, PDP where he served as the Board of Trustees chairman, leaving indelible marks in the management of the party”.

Also, an All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Mr. Bola Tinubu described the deceased as a leader who was resolutely committed to the unity and cohesion of the country.

He said in a statement by his Media Officer that: “Chief Anenih was a foremost politician and elder-stateman. He was resolutely committed to the unity and cohesion of this country. He worked for the upliftment of his Uromi hometown and Edo State, as he worked for the growth and development of Nigeria.
“A politician of immense repute. He gave so much to party politics and democracy in the country.
As one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he played a key role in the country’s resurgent democracy. It was no surprise that he later emerged the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP.

“Our path crossed in the Social Democratic Party where he was our national chairman. I recall that he was an energetic politician who played politics with all that he was imbued with.

“I commiserate with his family. I pray that they find the strength and courage to live without their patriarch. I also commiserate with Governor Godwin Obaseki and the government and people of Edo State”.

It would be recalled that before his exit, Chief Anenih voluntarily retired from active and partisan politics. A gesture that was received by teeming Nigerians with mixed feelings.

The statement from the Anenih family reads as follows:

OUR PATRIARCH, CHIEF ANTHONY AKHAKON ANENIH, PASSES ON

With a heavy heart and total submission to the will of the Almighty God, the family of Chief Anthony Akhakon Anenih, CFR, the Iyasele of Esanland, announces his passing on to glory today, Sunday, October 28, 2018 after a brief illness.

ShortStory I Monster Personified

By Fred Nwaozor

Opining that cultism is a dreaded and deadly confraternity, which remains a posteriori reasoning to any sane being, was unarguably a laughable assertion to each member of the ‘Scorpion tattoo’ whose actions or decisions remained a nightmare across the lengths and breadth of Ajala University of Technology situated in one of the states in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
The overall members of Scorpion tattoo, which was the most terrifying secret society on the campus, could not hold their breaths until ‘justice’ was tendered with cruelty to anyone whom they felt deserved it. Their unequalled weird and irrational prowess proceeded unabated that most prospective students of the university were repeatedly deterred from enrolling for the institution during Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
“Butcher them all!” the Capone would always exclaim each time he sent his men to the battle field.
On their part, his subjects comprising 23 able-bodied dudes wouldn’t hesitate to gladly and emphatically respond “their heads remain our meat” whenever the aforementioned instruction came up.
Any rational creature who happened to be close-by each time they chant in such uncanny and bilious manner may wonder if one’s head could actually serve as meat, though something that was invariably chanted in a bush – if not thick forest – might not be possibly heard by a second party or passerby.
Scorpion tattoo was the order of the day not just within the said zone but across the country as well as a nightmare to any genuine and dedicated security personnel resident in the area. Unravelling the brain behind the seeming unstoppable nefarious syndicate causing wanton destruction of lives and property was indeed a case study to any meaningful stakeholder both within and beyond.
It’s worth noting that the federal government declared a one-week state of emergency in the affected state when the incidence became colossally unbearable. This gesture was necessitated by two identical female twins who happened to be students of the university that were murdered on the campus in broad daylight by stray bullets during a duel between the Scorpion tattoo and its closest rival – the ‘Red legend’. The parents of the deceased persons who were influential personalities in the society had compelled the federal government to delve into the unfortunate matter with a view to ensuring that justice prevailed.
“I want you to ascertain whosoever that is behind this mess.” The Inspector General of Police (IGP) instructed the Commissioner of Police (CP) of the affected state on a telephone conversation during the era of the state of emergency.
“Sir,” the CP voiced out. “I promise you that I will leave no stone unturned towards capturing the bloody fool within five days.”
“Did I hear you say five days?”
“Sorry sir,” the CP said apologetically. “I meant three days.” He assured sceptically.
“Sorry for yourself,” the IGP roared. “I want the culprit in my office within 72 hours.” He added frantically.
       “Yes sir!”
       “Did I make myself clear?”
       “Yes sir!” the CP reiterated.
Definitely, the die had been cast. No doubt, the clique was in deep trouble. It was only an imbecile that would not comprehend that going by the IGP’s order, his person was boiling immensely and the CP needed not to be told that 72 hours actually meant three days, and nothing more.
How would the police loosen this vertex of poignancy? Where and whom were they meant to go to? The paramount consignment was to discover the idiot fueling the movement of the scorpion tattoo.
Since it was obvious that ‘no smoke without fire’, every security expert understood that for a clique to operate fiercely and fearlessly, there must be a ghost in their midst. And undoubtedly, the case of Scorpion tattoo wasn’t exceptional.
Thereafter, having charged and challenged his men to step up their actions, the state CP, Mr. Sule Ibrahim came up with a more viable strategy. A tight round-the-clock surveillance was set in the entire state and its environs.
The most worrisome and intriguing point was that students weren’t mainly the prey of the syndicate. Lecturers were not left out; and most importantly, they were the prime target.
It wasn’t that the police hadn’t been trying, or proactive, towards capturing the vandals but each time they came up with a unique strategy, the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof P.O. Akpan would calm the team down by convincing them that the school management had concluded a different internal mechanism through which the cult would be subdued, all to no avail.
       To be continued, please.

BREAKING: Okorocha Confirms Receipt of N12.6bn Paris Club Refund

The Executive Governor of Imo State, Nigeria, Chief Rochas Okorocha has confirmed the receipt of the third and final tranche of the Paris Club refund, amounting 12.6 billion naira, from the Federal Government (FG).

The governor who disclosed this on Friday, 26th October 2018 while swearing in some newly appointed commissioners in the Eastern Heartland at the Government House, Owerri, stated that the fund would be used to clear arrears of salaries and pensions, though

Governor Okorocha who refused to comment on the pensioners' backlog of gratuities said "9 billion naira will be utilized on the workers' two months salaries while 5 billion naira will be used for pensions".

It would be recalled that in December 2017, the state received about N7.8bn from the FG in respect of the Paris Club refund.

The governor who is currently aspiring for a senatorial slot under the auspices of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) towards representing the famous Imo West Senatorial District come 2019, equally disclosed that his administration was determined to complete all ongoing projects across the state as he enjoined the new appointees to double up actions with a view to ensuring that the Rescue Mission motives were duly actualized.

Rostrum further gathered that, according to the governor, his aim of aspiring to be at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly (NASS) at the expiration of his tenure in 2019 was to ensure that the bag eggs were not given any chance to devour the state of her economic prowess.

#WisdomTablet I Discovering the Good Side of the Bad Omen

Good Side of the Bad Omen
-------------------------

As the Nigeria's economic mayhem lingers unabated, not unlike something that could claim our lives unannounced, we must invariably bear in mind that it's a situation of this kind that nurtures mankind towards emerging GREAT.

Hence, we are expected to tactically utilize the good side of the bad omen while it prevails. The gospel truth remains that, the Good Side can't be utilized if it isn't discovered by the aggrieved person.

However, it's equally imperative to acknowledge that sometimes the blessing we earnestly seek doesn't come in a language we can interpret literally.

Such situation would only require looking inwards toward providing the actual meaning. I'm trying to hint that sometimes blessings come in disguise. This is a fact we must learn to absorb.

So, as we continue to tighten our seat belts, I'm appealing to us to remain resolute, resilient and persistent, believing that "he who fights and run away, needs to fight another day".

Courage and FAITH, therefore, remain the only factors that can truly lead us to that destination where our true FATE lies.

I immensely look forward to seeing YOU at the end, because I can't afford to be alone. I'm always of the strong view that a lonely great man cannot make a great society.

It is, thus, absolutely needless to say; it pains to Give Up whereas it pays to remain FOCUSED. Think about it!

See you another day!!

Column I Dissecting The "I'm Right" Syndrome

Early this year, I ran into a childhood pal called Samuel somewhere in Lagos State. In the process of our conversation, I learnt he got estranged with his spouse a few weeks back. With the burning quest to ascertain what actually truncated a happy five-year-old marriage, I requested that he had a drink with me at a nearby bar.

Summarily, the truth of the matter was that he battered the woman in question mercilessly, thus she decided to leave their matrimonial home based on her parents’ persuasions. It seemed that wasn’t the first time he would display such an attitude, but was reportedly the worst of all so far.

As I sipped my stout beer from the glass cup, just as he did with his lager, I enquired what really prompted the ruthless action. Samuel claimed she gave him the insult of his life, stating she called him names.

Having gotten infuriated with the whole story, I therein unequivocally blamed him entirely, telling him that that was not an enough excuse. I further notified him that insult of any kind shouldn’t warrant any iota of assault in a marriage, or any form of relationship. I observed he wasn’t pleased with my judgements but I didn’t bloody care.

To shorten the long story, I went further to inquire if he had showed remorse over the uncalled reaction. I learned till that moment, being about three weeks after the incident, the dude was yet to think of visiting his wife’s parental home let alone tendering an apology. To worsen it, he eventually told me he didn’t see anything wrong with what he did.

From the blunt response, I understood Samuel was trying to hide under a certain norm that holds the thought that ‘a man is always right’. It’s not anymore news that in some African traditional settings, you cannot tell a man to his face that he is wrong when trying to mediate between him and his spouse. And, such an existing belief has ostensibly succeeded in beclouding the sense of reasoning of most men, particularly the young ones.

The fact is; the ‘I’m right’ syndrome has continued to endanger various healthy relationships. The paradox is that most of these staggering, or pale-looking, relationships were rightly built on a golden pedestal. But the inability to show remorse by any of the party involved, having erred, continually poses threat to the anticipated growth of the union.

Allowing your extremism mentality to control your actions would definitely make any relationship you are into crash on arrival. You aren’t supposed to strongly believe in everything. Don’t live a life of a fanatic. Sometimes, compromise is highly consequential, especially when it calls for way forward.

Relationship is about compromise or sacrifice. Hence, you must be willing at all times to give up on a certain ideology just for peace to reign. If your ego is the problem, you must sacrifice it to enable other things you yearn for to flow. It’s noteworthy that ego had abruptly ended countless enticing unions than death did. You must be willing to give up that venom in you that is unabated posing threat to your cherished relationship. One thing must give way for the other.

It’s always crucial to acknowledge that everybody can never be right at the same time. Someone must be wrong. And when you are right or wrong, your conscience will certainly communicate to you concerning where you belong. It suffices to assert that you are invariably expected to listen to the aforementioned feature, because it is the only tool that can lead you to the apt path.

Even, sometimes when you are right, you can assume that you are wrong just for the sake of way forward. It’s simply like a battle field where someone must accept defeat. This is where maturity comes in. Honestly, it takes a mature mindset to keep a relationship going or alive. Maturity is like lubrication oil in any ongoing union.

Similarly, immaturity in a relationship is not unlike a bad tyre in a moving vehicle. The latter can never move properly until you change the former. And if the driver tries to manage the situation, it would surely draw the journey backwards; hence, he will never arrive at his proposed destination. Aside not getting to the destination, it might even cause an accident in the process.

So, maturity is one of the key recipes in any relationship in existence, be it business, friendship, courtship, marriage, or what have you. It would make us to possess a flexible mindset rather than a rigid one, thereby keeping us away from the dangers of fanaticism. The said pattern of ideology possesses venom that bears the potential of destroying, within a twinkle of an eye, what a man has suffered in building for years.

For crying out loud; you can’t continue to say ‘I am right’ even when aware that you are wrong. Don’t cheat on your conscience if you truly want your relationship to excel. ‘I’m sorry’ doesn’t really mean you are wrong; it rather means you truly cherish the relationship more than your ego. Think about it!

SPORTS: Super Eagles Move Four Places Upward In the latest FIFA Ranking

 Super Eagles

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are now occupying the 44th position in the latest FIFA ranking release on Thursday, 25th October 2018.

It's noteworthy that they were formerly occupying 48th position in the last ranking released in September.

This is not unconnected with their recent performance in the ongoing AFCON qualifiers. Their present position signifies that they have benefited from the consecutive wins in the said matches.

They are now the third best on the African continent, following Tunisia and Senegal who are occupying the 1st and 2nd positions, respectively. The Tunisia and Senegal moved up to 22nd and 25th, respectively, in the latest FIFA ranking.

The latest ranking therefore revealed that the Super Eagles not only improved on the world stage but also on the continent.

Other top ranked teams in Africa include Congo DR (46), Morocco (47), Cameroon (51), Ghana (52), Burkina Faso (57), Egypt (58) and Côte d'Ivoire (64).
