THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY AND ITS POIGNANT STATE AS THE ASUU STRIKE LINGERS
Brethren, amidst a certain city, comes the unannounced mist in the midst of the entire populace in spite of the early morning prayer presented to the Almighty for a friendly and easy going atmospheric condition. Though embarrassing and astonishing, but I remained calm. Lately I found out that many became extremely impatient and nervous thereby exploding having waited patiently for so long to hear something that’s of positive value from the horse’s mouth; a pathetic phenomenon that aroused or triggered my humble pen. Maybe I’ve been sounding poetic, but that wasn’t my intention. So if that’s the case, I sincerely beg for your pardon.
The last time I checked, I wholly understood beyond any reasonable doubt that no one would be a slave in his/her own home. In the same vein, I also came up with the view that, no right thinking individual would look into the eyes of his father and say, “you’re a fool!” regardless of the circumstance he might find himself.
I woke up this morning and subsequently I felt pain on one of my limbs, arm precisely. I searched thoroughly to find out what actually prompted the anomaly to no avail. Finally I concluded that such incident could be usual provided that one still lives or breathes. In other words, a dead body or a body in a comatose state can never feel pain on any part of the body. But don’t forget, some sudden pains are not usual; thus if that becomes the case, the person who feels such abnormal pain must as a matter of fact and urgency seek for a thorough diagnosis. Let’s ride on!
In Nigeria, taking the education sector as a case study, if we must tell ourselves nothing but the truth, you will quite agree with me that the sector in question has been in shambles for decades now thereby constituting unannounced pandemonium on a yearly basis. If you must permit me to speak, then I would summarily say that our education sector is simply nothing to write home about compare to others across the globe. You will bear me witness that since I’ve been in this business, I’ve never for once sounded personal in any of my view, and I will never do such a silly thing because it’s against my faith; therefore I sincerely believe that I’m convening the interest of most of us.
Truly without mincing words, the Nigerian society has been in a state of poignancy as regards the aforementioned sector. It’s no longer news that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been in an industrial action for over two months now. According to the Union, its paramount reason for going on strike was due to the poor infrastructural facilities found in the universities across the federation. We all know that this is not the first time the body would be on strike. In fact, if I’m not mistaken the incidence has become an annual ritual in Nigeria.
Several meetings have been held between the federal government and ASUU coupled with various students unions’ protest in respect to putting an end to the ugly scene, all to no avail. The anomaly has attracted series of concerns from many concerned individuals and corporate bodies in the country thereby creating inconsequential antagonisms amongst various stakeholders. Honestly even the dumb have been forced to speak with regard to the ongoing devastating melodrama. Though few has chosen to remain silent and calm like a crocodile targeting a prey in the water. Despite all these, apparently it appears nothing has been done to restore normalcy.
At this juncture, I wish to ask a concise and simple question; which is, do we truly believe that our youths are the leaders of tomorrow or is it just a citation of no tangible value? I believe most of us know the answer to the question therefore I think I should rather put up a gospel truth.
A country like ours is no longer a child; thus, I don’t in any way expect it to be dancing to a child’s tune. For crying out loud, fifty three (53) years is not just fifty three days; in other words, such age it’s not a child’s play and ought not to be seen as one. On this note, I urge us to note that those who fought for the independence of this noble country were not fools; so the least they expect to hear even in their respective graves is that the present leaders dance makossa when they are meant to dance hip-hop or vice-versa. Think about it!

The Labour sector
SCENIC SCENARIOS: THE WAY FORWARD (6)
“I was shocked and enraged at such ingratitude,” someone lamentably concluded at my last meeting with him. Few seconds before the meeting begun, I was enraptured due to a contract I just won. But the series of lamentations that accompanied the meeting introduced an ennui. Some days after the meeting in question took place, I was privileged to be in the midst of another similar meeting. During the section for matters arising, after digesting a certain critical issue as the leader of the gathering, consequently someone submissively raised his hand. Having granted him the room to earn his view, he commenced with the clause, “if not that they tell lies and show no sign of contrition…” As if that was the end; a consequential gathering resulted immediately after the meeting. A good friend of mine who happens to be the Secretary General came from behind and whispered at my humble ear, “the meeting was very successful, but was dedicated to the chameleons.”
Brethren, if truly that one is conscience-stricken due to a war he solely initiated, then by now, he ought to devote himself to societal peace. I strongly believe that, our lovely grief-stricken public servants coupled with the vulnerable maids in their midst would have a forgiving mind if our honourable members would embrace a total repentance. In fact there’s no need for euphemism if euphoria must be ascertained; thus let’s go straight to the point.
Don’t forget, we’re discussing labour. According to the context of this edition, labour is used to refer to the people who work in a country or industry.
To begin with, in Nigeria the above tool (labour) has been misunderstood thereby resulting to the ongoing state of neglect experienced by the public/civil servants. Needless to say that, they have been sidelined. It’s not in any way funny to hear that those whom I describe as the workaholics, and who most times suffer from nervous breakdown is being treated like bunch of ignoramuses. The other day, someone was telling me that she waited so long that by the time her turn came she was already a nervous wreck. According to her, she never recovered from it, and was very nervy afterwards. Honestly, it’s not funny at all. Most times at my lonely time, I wonder if we’re just daydreaming in regard to the vision 20:20:20 because in any society, the public servants should receive any credit as regards any ongoing productivity. To the best of my knowledge, in any developed nation, their interest comes first before any other would be debated or treated.
The above mal-handling has solely constituted the incessant industrial actions embarked by the Nigerian workers. Most times, the so-called strike is either being suspended or put to stop without any tangible reason. If truly that the reason for the suspension or termination was genuine, why shouldn’t the voice of the entire workers be heard and considered by their leaders before they would be mandated/asked to go back to their respective offices? The funniest part; in most cases the concerned authorities’ tactic seems to be, to bludgeon the demonstrators into submission. What a world!
In any occasion where the labour leader chooses to be stubborn, or different from his predecessors, even the workers in question see it as an expensive measure. Which is, they believe that any industrial action should have a limit whether their cry is heard or not. In other words, we’re even afraid while biding for our right, or the payment of the job we did. Tokenism indeed!
My humble message to the various governments; if the wheel of any moving vehicle can’t function properly, the machine can never work effectively. And, it’s the users’ will that would ascertain the efficiency. We must come together and fix this bad wheel. Thus, we ought to be willing because willingness comes first. So are we truly willing?
In this case with regard to the ongoing discussion, the labour is the wheel, the country remains the vehicle (machine), while the governments and other employers of labour are the users. This is a fact. Yes, a fancy fact. Let’s abide by it and we shall see that the Lord is good.
The End!

X-mas Celebration
X-MAS CELEBRATION: A WORTHWHILE VIRTUE
Brethren, many of us have taken to wearing visors and other similar devices to protect our eyes and visages from the possible effects of harmattan. Taking Nigeria as a case study, many would testify that the ongoing climatic phase causes virulent feelings, and as well, may lead to various virulent diseases. While some would definitely testify that it is a welcome scene therefore should continue for eternity. Honestly, these and more similar phenomena observe amongst mankind is not man-made but wholly natural.
Let’s put it this way; if brandy is good in bringing the real man/woman in you as a person at any given time. And, that fellow that appears to be intimate to you believes in the work of whisky in respect to similar purpose. Then conclusively, it signifies that you both are of different nature, or possess distinct idiosyncrasies. Thus significantly, no matter the level of intimacy in any relationship/affair be it symbiotic or parasitic, the exact nature of the two or more parties involved can never be compromised or interchanged.
In geography, we were taught that about seventy percent (70%) of the earth crust is covered with water, while about thirty percent (30%) is covered with land. Brethren, there’s a big problem or error attached to this geographic estimation coupled with approximation. The astronomers who carried out the research and rounded off with such conclusion were so myopic to understand the fact that, even the part of the earth crust covered with water is as well covered with land. It’s not a paradox. It’s a fact, and it is natural. Of course the bed-rock of any sea, ocean, river, pond, lake et cetera is land. In agriculture, we call it the soil. Conclusively, every part of the earth crust is covered with the soil / land. But this is not my optimum interest in this edition. My interest is this; despite the level of intimacy between the land and the natural water, they still don’t mix together. This simply means that each of the compounds or substances in question is made up of a certain distinct nature. This is a fact. Yes, a fancy fact.
Each of the paragraphs above has proven to us that nature is very powerful. Nature could be regarded as all the animals, plants and other things in the world that are not made by man; and all the events, features and processes that are not caused by mankind. In a nut shell, nature is anything that is not man-made. In other words, it’s older than the world. Yes, nature has been in existence before the world was created. This is why, most times anything caused by nature seem to be mysterious. That is, beyond man’s imagination, creativity or creative ingenuity. Therefore, nature controls. It rules. Above all, it finalizes.
We’re discussing Christmas (X-mas). We’re discussing its annual celebration. First and foremost, what is X-mas celebration? X-mas celebration is a religious festival or ritual being observed on every 25th December by the Christendom to mark the birth of Christ. Next question; who is Christ? Christ is one of the names of Jesus whom Christians believe to be the only begotten son of God and whose teachings are the basis of Christianity. According to the Christian writ, Christ was sent by God to sanctify the sinful world and He obliged. He came, saw, taught, healed and delivered the world. Most importantly, He died for our sins to be forgiven. What a tremendous generosity! As a devoted Christian, Catholic to be precise, I understand that Christ was not really born on the 25th of December; but such date was selected by the past Christendom in order to mark the day such generous being came into the world since the actual date of His birth was not painstakingly recorded by the scribes or historians of His time. They saw it necessary for such date to be remembered amongst mankind because the day Christ came or was born marked the beginning of man’s sanctification or deliverance which remains the most vital Christian tool in existence. Let’s ride on!
Brethren, truly Christ came or was born, saw and conquered. Above all, He accomplished His mission because mankind was freed from bondage by His willingful death. After the death of Christ, He resurrected. Before His death, He resurrected many souls. And this, remains the most mysterious act performed by Him. Thus, resurrection is nature. If truly we believe that such vital tool is nature, in other words, Christ is nature. He’s beyond man’s imagination. Starting from His birth down to His death, everything about Him was mysterious.
Brethren, if amongst us we have some group of persons we owe an allegiance to, then what stops us from observing more greater respect to a being whose existence while on earth was totally mysterious or above man’s imagination? In other words, there is tremendous reason for X-mas celebration to be continually observed because it remains the most important Christian virtue practised here on earth. Such date which was set aside to mark the day Christ was born should not in any way be compromised because it is the birthday of our Messiah; therefore, remains a worthwhile Christian virtue. Think about it!

Time management
TIME MANAGEMENT: LET’S TALK ABOUT IT
Brethren, I’m not here to make placatory gestures, so, don’t expect my analysis to be submissive. Rather, I’m here to present nothing but the fact, thus, I must be frank in my deposition. It would benefit me nothing to back the truth and embrace fallacy in order to please my beloved friends and fans. Honestly, I was called for this job, and my paramount interest is to continue pleasing He who sent me. Any of His calls remains a priority to me. All my initiatives are attributable to His sole inspiration or divine making. Therefore, they should be dedicated to Him alone. And, if such fact holds, then I would stop at nothing to say whatever I was directed or assigned to say. No two ways about it; else I should be blamed for whatever rot that befalls me in respect to withholding the fact.
In any context you may be perceiving it, time remains “time”. It’s as old as the world. From my view, it remains the oldest factor or tool in the world. It was the only factor that was obeyed by the “Almighty” during the world’s creation. Yes, the world was created in respect to time. It’s continually cited that, the only constant thing in life is “change”. In the same vein, the only factor that controls change or transition is time. This means, change highly depends on time. In other words, time is hyper-constant since it’s the only tool that controls the only constant factor on earth. One Popular Nigerian musician, Mike Okiri, once sang “ Time na money”. In the content of the song, he went further to preach to the world to stop playing with their time by tagging it as the only thing that could ascertain the desires of one’s mind, heart or soul. I bet you, most musicians are born evangelists because they preach the gospel in the fullness.
Most people spend the whole of their time in the church, all in the name of seeking for survival, successes or abundant blessings. Some spend the whole hours in a day reading the holy writ in the name of attaining salvation. Some, mostly the house wives, spend the whole days in a week gossiping; still, this set of people can’t work on their talents to ensure that they introduce gossip columns in various newspapers or magazines in Nigeria. After all, all the notable comedians in the country started like that. And today, they are very useful to the society. The most pathetic part of the above practices is that some of these persons that spend almost all their time in the church do so for the sake of their anticipated success in their various forth coming exams. I wonder if God would come down to sit for the exams on their behalf. Why should people continue living in total ignorance coupled with extreme blindness? Yet, they can’t even obtain deliverance from the churches in question. How can a candidate for a certain exam willingly create a concrete disparity between him and the exam? Or, is it part of the miracle that happened in Canaan, Judea or Jerusalem?
Let me make it clear to you; before Christ fed the five thousand people with thousands of fishes and bread, He was presented with a few pieces/copies of fishes and bread. In the same vain, before providing abundant wine for the wedding that took place at Canaan, He was provided with surplus water by those in need of the wine. Even, before Christ healed the blind during the Pentecost day, prior to His arrival at the point of the deliverance, the blind man was already seated at the stipulated venue. Does it imply that, there weren’t churches available then? Above all, before Zaccheus was delivered from his iniquities, he made tremendous personal effort to ensure that he has a direct contact with Christ. Despite the crowd coupled with his height, Christ was able to see him because he (Zaccheus) swallowed his pride and humbly climbed the tree. So, he sought and worked for salvation, and he embraced it.
Brethren, at this juncture I wish to ask, what do you use your time for; where do you utilize it, and how do you manage it? Most people arrive at meeting arena two hours after the scheduled time. They have succeeded in tagging (calling) it “African time”. If I may ask, do Africa has its own time? Has she (Africa) succeeded in personalizing the tool (time) which remains the only common factor on earth? Brethren, wake up! Hour of deliverance.
Even, before one could boast of been a prolific writer, he/she must had read hundreds or thousands of books/journals. To be known as a writer, you must have been a reader for years. Read my lips. Reading would broaden your mind and consequently enable you to write, say or do something comfortably and adequately. Therefore, writing is a subject of reading. Though, the reverse also holds. And, this only depends on time. Honestly, ‘time’ is dependable.
To be honest, many have died due to lack of time management. Thousands of people have been paralyzed or deformed, both spiritually and physically, as a result of the above. We must work collectively to eradicate the societal cankerworm causing this social emaciation. And, the time to act is now!

Traffic lights & flyovers
THE URGENT NEED FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND FLYOVERS ON OUR ROADS
Decently created and beautified. Spiced with worthwhile endowments, coupled with wholesome idiosyncrasies. If only she would understand the true meaning of safety. No, she does. But, the conundrum remains the lack of holistic sensitivity of her political frontrunners. Despite the persistent anticipation by her subjects at every given interregnum, the emergence of the subsequent victor still produces atmosphere that appears frivolous. Honestly, her subjects have been popularly known as people who inure themselves to tragedy due to lack of sufficient existence of the aforementioned tools, traffic lights and flyovers, and other consequential facilities. In spite of the declamatory and repetitive critique so far on the case study in question, our virgin roads still appear abandoned thereby keeping most of the vehicles in abeyance. What about the drivers and the innocent passengers that had been crippled or rendered useless while many had embraced the forbidden six-feet due to the consequence of the above leakage?
A ruthless and utterly abhorrent system. A system where the interest of the masses appears to be at the bottom line. A system where billions of naira owned by the entire citizenry are being siphoned into a personal wallet. A system where only few benefits from the national cake. Still, the deceitful elements or so-called nationalists appear as advocates of unity. Though, some are interested and ready to embrace abnegation, but, influence remains a forsaken cankerworm. Brethren, hour of deliverance! And, nobody would be exempted, including me. Yes, we all must be delivered. Believe me, it’s a fact. A fancy fact. Lest I forget, we still have an enormous task ahead of us in this edition. Let’s ride on.
Traffic lights and flyovers are means through which traffic problems are restricted or avoided. In other words, they are instruments that are used to fight traffic crimes or aberrations on the roads which they are situated. Traffic lights are usually found either on cross junctions or T-junctions, while flyovers are mainly found on cross junctions. The latter enables vehicle users to operate both on and above the road because it’s a structure which carries one road above another, while the former, as a programmed digital instrument, instructs vehicle users on when to pass in, or cross to a particular direction.
Thus, lack of the above devices contributes immensely to an increase in traffic congestion on our roads. For instance, a driver of a certain vehicle may decide to cross a junction without considering traffic rules and regulations because of the absence of a traffic light on the junction in question. This would result to motor accident due to collision because the driver of another vehicle coming from the adjacent side of the junction may or would like to cross the junction without minding the presence of other vehicles. In this case, every driver becomes a traffic determinant. For years, the manual/human traffic control system had been in use. But, this is ancient and insufficient. I bet you, the human traffic system wouldn’t be enough/ efficient to control the traffic or maintain the traffic regulations. Even at that, let’s save our human resources from the ongoing state of fathomless stress. This and more traffic problems are experienced or encountered on our roads on daily basis.
However, having stated the above traffic problems or contingencies, you will agree with me that, if the rate and major causes of motor accidents is/are to be noted or considered by the government, the lack of traffic lights and flyovers would be given as the only answer.
Traffic lights and flyovers should be situated on various junctions in all the towns/cities in Nigeria, including the federal roads. If traffic lights are installed on the various junctions, the vehicles will cross as at when due. Also, construction of flyovers would enable vehicles coming from two sides of a cross junction to move on top of the road, while others would move on the normal axis, the ground level thereby paving ways for the pedestrians. In some cases or areas, people on foot are being asked to walk on the flyover while the vehicles would use the normal road level, as the case may be. Thus, massive introduction of both devices will surely ease traffic congestion on our roads.
On the other hand, the governments should ensure that, the dilapidated ones on our various roads are totally revived for the sake of humanity. Most of the traffic lights on the roads, likewise the flyovers, are just there as monumentary equipment/structures. They ought to be revived; our roads should not be left naked or being abandoned. We shouldn’t forget that, this problem directly affects every occupant of the country. We should continue to say no to ignorance because it’s a deadly disease. Take for instance, the ‘Almighty’ Niger bridge is dying gradually and fast approaching the forbidden six-feet. Should we allow the old man die like a mere ant. Isn’t it disgusting? Yes, it’s jaundiced!
The residents of some areas in Nigeria where traffic lights and/or flyovers are intensely recognized experience non/less traffic problems. Therefore, both the federal and state governments should kindly include this project in their respective budgets/agendas to ensure that their respective areas are free from traffic imbroglios.
The implementation of the above measure will drastically improve traffic rules and regulations thereby reducing the level of incessant traffic congestion on our roads. The government should therefore take a tangible step to see that this project is actualized. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) ought to be an advocate of this crusade.
Creating an organized and beautified nation should be our watchword. Our society should be deeply imbued with it’s occupants’ desires.

Impacts of Library & Laboratory
THE IMPACTS OF LIBRARY AND LABORATORY ON SCIENCES
Brethren, your proximity to something/someone does not mean that you can have access to it/him at any given time. On the other hand, being very far from a certain dream/aim doesn’t mean that you can’t actualize it at your proposed or anticipated time provided the required step(s) were properly taken.
Let’s have it this way; everyone was created for a finite purpose. And for one to actualize the purpose for which he/she was created, he must set his goal coupled with extreme pursuit towards the goal/aim. Above all, such pursuit must be accompanied with absolute carefulness. But have it in mind that no goal would be actualized without considering or encountering the required step(s) regardless of the amount of effort sacrificed. Interestingly, if proper steps are taken towards actualizing a certain dream, such dream/target would be obtained at the anticipated time irrespective of the length of the journey in question.
Someone called me few days ago to register her grievances in the Nigerian science sector. In her preamble, she told me that if care is not taken Nigeria might migrate from developing to underdeveloped nation. Honestly being a concerned citizen, I was touched by the preamble. Immediately I put my phone on recording mode so I can review the conversation at any convenient time. I pleaded with her to tell me what she was actually seeing that I was yet to see or observe. She proceeded by informing me that in her recent visit to some of the existing government colleges in her home State gushed out some amount of tears from her God-given eyes. At this point, the story became more shocking which prompted a sudden readjustment of my humble posture. She told me that the schools could hardly boast of a single science laboratory. Being a lady who was searching for an appropriate school to do her teaching practice; and she’s studying Chemistry in Education. According to her, the schools in question can be referred to as mere football fields. Due to this scenario, she became fade up and decided to travel to her native village to embark on farming rather than passing away her precious time in a glorious nursery school.
We are discussing the role of libraries and laboratories in scientific methodology. In many of my past editions on this column, I had categorically stated the enormous merit of science and technology in our respective societies. Brethren, science has really contributed tremendously towards the global socio-economic growth. I think without science, we ought to have remained blind. Yes before science was enhanced, the entire world was blind. Take for instance, imagining a society that is yet to embrace telecommunications and the media is just like visualizing an organization being kept under lock and key or in a solitary confinement. Let’s ride on!
The bed-rock of any scientific discovery or enhancement is the library. Yes, any reseach work must begin in the library. Having embraced the library, the next arena to be encountered by the scientist is the laboratory, or the workshop. There is no two ways about it. And these are the required steps in actualizing a certain scientific goal. These steps must be embraced to ensure adequate attainment of our desired or proposed scientific project. On this note, all hands must be on deck to ensure that the various libraries and laboratories in all the primary and secondary schools in Nigeria are revived by making them well equipped. Above all, the gesture should be extended to our institutions of higher learning. Apart from the science laboratories, well equipped workshops should be established in any higher institution that is offering engineering and/or environmental sciences. Of course the medical science students are meant to pass through a teaching hospital that is fully equipped to enable them acquire a thorough medical training.
The ongoing developmental stride in Nigeria which is becoming too sluggish should be attributed to the neglect in our science sector. The aforementioned sector requires total overhaul. And for this to be realized, we must wake up from this long lasted sleep. We shouldn’t continue to live in the past; fourty two (42) years of independence is not fourty two days. Let’s tell ourselves the truth and endeavour to sweep out these bunch of obstreperous elements constituting this economic mirage.
If I may ask, do we really want to embrace the promise-land? I think the only answer to the question should be nothing but “yes”. Even a day old child would still dance in that direction. Without being asked, we seriously need to embrace the promise-land because it’s our entitlement/inheritance. And for this to be actualized, we must stop deceiving ourselves. Believe me brethren, having mentioned murder/suicide as the most grievous sin on earth, deceit should be seen as the second most. Think about it!

The Impact of Religion on Science
THE IMPACT OF RELIGION ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Brethren, if you’re just waking up, then you need to shout a very big hallelujah because the Lord is good, and shall always remain good. I’m not here to prophesize or preach, but to interpret and disseminate the already preached gospel as an Apostle of the “Almighty”. I keep on saying it; I’m a realist. I belong to the school of thought known as “realism”. As a realistic fellow, I stick to the true/real nature of any situation.
In one of my previous editions, I made it clear that science is nature and vice-versa. Therefore, it’s as old as the world. On the other hand, if you’re yet to know or to be informed that religion is also as old as the world, then you have been sleeping and need to wake up. This is why I unequivocally stated earlier that, I’m not here to preach but to disseminate. Let me categorically make it clearer; you were born through a scientific (biological) methodology and that is nature. And, same nature is controlled by a certain supremacy believed by all existing religious faiths. Yes, every single soul on earth believes that there is a certain supreme being that rules, controls and sanctifies the world. After all, in philosophy under the “evolutionary theory”, after all possible debates it was concluded that God exists. But the dichotomy remains, who is the supremacy or God, or Allah, et cetera, as the case may be. That is where the differences lie. But the fancy fact is that, there is surely a supremo.
If you’re just joining us, we’re discussing science and technology and how it has been immensely affected by religion. I don’t know where to start, but I must commence somewhere because every story or analysis must have a beginning.
One of my associates or fellow contractors who is also into engineering designs and construction once shared one of his professional experiences (ordeals) with me. He was awarded a certain contract to construct an Electronic Power Inverter (EPI), 500 Watts capacity precisely. EPI is a locally built electronic device that supplies uninterruptable electricity to the consumer. It’s mainly done on contract basis depending on the consumer’s want or desire. According to him, the duration of the construction lingered more than anticipated and his client who couldn’t wait to see the completed job was definitely kept waiting. Funny enough, the same type of locally built step-up transformer which he had been using for similar construction and capacity was being used. But while testing the device, he couldn’t generate up to 110 AC Volts, talk less of 220 AC Volts which is usually the required output voltage. As a devoted Christian, he had an inspiration to embark on a 3-day fasting and prayer. After observing the religious/ritual ceremony, he went back to the ongoing construction. And, fortunately for him, the outcome immediately became a success. Based on his narration, at this juncture, his mind was loaded with tremendous smiles coupled with bunch of mysteries. What a world!
About four years ago or thereabouts, a certain bridge situated at my home town (Awo-Omamma), “Njaba-Bridge” to be precise, was marked for renovation while the federal road construction was taking place. And, the contract was awarded to “Julius Berger”. When the bridge construction began, I learnt the workers were being faced with enormous challenges in respect to the outcome of their collective effort. Due to this, the journey that had already taken more than expected became fruitless. Brethren, the management of the Company went back to the drawing board. And, they concluded to conduct a more stronger religious ritual which they did. After the completion of the ritual, the bridge construction became successful. What a supremacy!
Let’s go to the telecommunication sector. Yes, at recent time, virtually every grown up soul in Nigeria has access to a mobile phone. Have you ever ask yourself how come about the phone in your hand? Who made or invented it? What mechanism was actually involved? These and more similar questions should continue to recycle in our respective medulla oblongata. I know, most of us would have the believe that the phone was made only as a result of the electronic construction that was carried out. Wrong insinuation. Though, that is primary or the rudiments because one must have a talent before embracing the religious efficacy. But, I put it up to you that such electronic design coupled with the construction became successful because religion was embraced. Even, come to think of it; it’s same supremacy that gives or ascertains talents possessed by people. So, why can’t it have an absolute control over such talent/gift? Let’s ride on!
Okay, let me take you a bit closer to the aviation industry. Do you think that the air craft flies only due to the science / engineering mechanism that was fabricated or put together by the manufacturer(s)? Think about it!
Brethren, my fact could be an enigma. But the only truth of the matter remains that, “Science and Technology” cannot be successful without embracing or acknowledging “Religion”. And, until Nigeria acknowledges this fact, we would continue to remain behind in our worthwhile technological strides/endeavours. Honestly, we have the talents. We also have the brains. And above all, we have the required religion. It’s just to apply them (both) because they are interwoven. But mind you, my evangelism (idea) is not iconoclastic, therefore, I’m not agitating for theocracy.

Science & Technology
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: THE BEDROCK OF ANY SOCIETAL DEVELOPMENT
Today, we’re discussing science and technology as a discipline, and how it affects any given society; its true impacts and roles towards societal development.
Science is a study of the nature and behaviour of natural things, and the knowledge we obtain from them. On the other hand, technology is the activity or study of using scientific knowledge for practical purposes. In other words, it (technology) could be defined as the implementation of the experience(s)/knowledge derived from science.
To begin with, honestly, science is not a term one can scribble at any given time because it’s as old as the world. More so, it’s powerful. Due to its powerful idiosyncrasy, most times, it appears mysterious to the sight of those we refer to as the laymen. Believe me, science is nature itself because it deals with the latter (nature) directly. This is why, most times, those things or occurrences we tag as mysteries could be scientific. To cut the story short, science is the representative of the ‘Almighty’ (creator) here on earth; it’s the means through which He (the creator) makes everything easier for mankind. Please, I’m not trying to mystify you, or introduce a mystique. The best thing you can do for yourself is, to accept the fact and forget the story that accompanies it.
This is the fact: God created the world and provided mankind with the materials he could use to create/invent, or manufacture the subsequent human wants (needs). Secondly, He introduced the techniques/mechanism man could use to subdue those materials he was provided with. This technique(s) is/are what we regard to as science, and that is the key. Then thirdly, God gave man the knowledge that could make those techniques to be properly utilized or implemented. The above knowledge is nothing but technology. Have you seen how old science is, or how far it has been existing? Science was initiated by God himself; and it’s being controlled by Him. In one of our subsequent editions on this column, we shall be discussing science and religion; this will enable you to acknowledge how the Supreme Being (God) controls the existence and progress of science.
Let’s ride on. The holy bible/quran has already said it all; God is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient. Meaning, He remaineth the same and has complete power over all things and people. He’s everywhere; and, He knowneth everything; respectively. Since science represents God himself, and as well, being controlled by Him, it (science) also possesses the aforementioned idiosyncrasies or endowments. Honestly science remains the same and has complete power over all things and people; it’s everywhere or affects all lives at the same time; and, it seems to know everything. In a more concise sentence, it is everything or anything.
Yes, science is anything. Since it deals with nature, or it’s nature itself; which is, whatever we can feel, see or touch. Thus, it is anything; anything around, beneath, or beyond us. This’s no cock and bull story; it’s a fact. I had earlier advised you to dwell with only the fact and keep the story behind you.
So, in what way has science contributed in societal development? First, let’s consider the true meaning or the definition of the tool, development, in accordance with the context of this edition, or as it is used in the above sentence/topic.
Development could be used in many contexts. But, in this edition, we’re only concerned on the improvement of lives of the citizenry/occupants of any society, or country, as the case may be. Has science truly improved the welfare/lives of the people? It’s a very simple question, because, that we can walk/work, travel, and/or study faster is by the sole effort of science. Your car, aeroplane/jet/rocket, computer, canvass/shoe, gas cooker, and what have you, are sciences. They were all actualized by the proper implementation of the knowledge acquired from science. Or, in a simpler form; they’re the products of scientific methodology/initiative.
One certain day, I was driving with one of my intimate friends. Our starting point was my home town, Awo-Omamma in Imo State and we were heading to Owerri. I told my friend that we shall arrive Owerri within fifteen minutes by the special grace of God; I promised him because we were already late to the meeting we were heading to, and he was deeply disturbed over the lateness. But, he was doubtful over my solemn promise because he has been used to public transport that believes in, or operates on ‘dropping and picking’. Believe me, before thirteen minutes we were at the stipulated venue for the meeting. As soon as we arrived, he glanced at his wrist watch, and smiled. I asked him the reason for the smile. He looked at me and exclaimed, “Science is good!” I understood the compliment in the fullness, so, I responded, “you can say that again.” Brethren, a novice (layman) who happened to be around us may think that my friend spoke Greek. But, being his fellow scientist, I comprehended the remark.
Frankly speaking, science is good. Infact, being good is an understatement; it’s intact and truly powerful. Honestly, I don’t know where to begin or where to end while discussing science because its content is versed, or highly voluminous.
Highly voluminous? No; limitless! Actually, it has been a holistic approach. Think about it!!

Nigeria @ 52
NIGERIA @ 52: LET’S TALK ABOUT IT
Previously or earlier, it has been cited by same social analyst (columnist), Fred Nwaozor, that birthday anniversary celebration is a worthwhile phenomenon irrespective of where the celebrant is coming from, heading to or presently standing. You must celebrate for God to acknowledge that you truly appreciate what He has done in your life. Many has been writing in respect to celebration in a language you may not comprehend, but I’m here to decipher. Arrest me if I go contrary to my promise.
When you celebrate, don’t fail to count your previous blessings (successes) and name them. Also, your failures so far should also be considered. The former must contrast the latter regardless of its numbers because both have no meeting point. But don’t forget, when it calls for statistics, one must supersede the other. If in your own case, the latter (failures) happen to supersede the former (successes), then you must put more tremendous effort in your subsequent worthwhile endeavours. Such approach requires total devotion and extreme sincerity. Which means, you must stride to actualize the end of your goal no matter the circumstance you may encounter since it’s already written that, the end justifies the means.
Brethren, today we’re celebrating the “giant of Africa”, we’re celebrating Nigeria. In other words, we’re celebrating ourselves. Therefore, we remain the celebrants in this euphoric season. So let’s analyze. We all must be ready for this analysis because it’s a collective concernment. Yes, this celebration calls for adequate analysis because we’ve been celebrating for decades now.
All the way from 1960, from civilian leadership to military dictatorship. Then a bit bridge that introduced another civilian administration. Within a twinkle of an eye, another military dictatorship set in. From the autocratic ruling down to the present democratic system that have lasted for over thirteen years. Transition remains the only constant tool on earth and it’s strictly dependent on time. So the above phenomenon should be recorded by the historians as products of time, therefore, should not be misinterpreted. Thus, the respective seasons that resulted in the transitions called for them. In other words, anything that transpired/happened ought to be attributed to a particular season. Which means, there is a season for everything under the sky (Eccl. 3: 1-8). This would enable us to accept our fate(s) in good faith regardless of the gravity. But, being human, your fate in most occasions may call for thorough questioning. It’s not by our making; purely natural. It’s a fact. Yes, a fancy fact. So, have it in mind that, most times our actions are being controlled by nature. Thus, irrespective of your religious doctrines, you must learn to accept that, nature remains a very powerful tool in respect to our existence here on earth as I had earlier stated in one of my past editions.
We’re progressing in our analysis. Mathematically, or generally, progression could be arithmetic or geometric. Either of them that transpired, the bone of contention remains that, progression is in place whether steady, frictional or galloping. Take this note; in any critique one may be working on, the introductory section should never be sidelined or scribble because it remains the basis or rudiments. This is what we’ve achieved in the above paragraph(s). So, let’s ride on.
A good friend of mine called from Zaria in Kaduna State barely two days ago to announce that Nigeria would be 52 in two days time being today. I told him, which means the woman is fast approaching 60 therefore the season calls for real examination and scrutiny, and proper analysis. He informed me that, there was nothing to examine or scrutinized; stating that the woman had achieved tremendously having given birth to millions of talents. I tried to figure out where he was coming from. But, he lightly and amusingly concluded that, all these incessant explosions and militancy in all nooks and crannies are attributable to the talents. What a paradox, coupled with euphemism! Anyway, whatever figure of speech that set in, the point remains the information dissemination, and it has been done and achieved.
But, let’s be frank. From militancy to explosions. In the midst of the uncertainty, oil subsidy set in. As if that was not enough, lack of budget implementation followed suit. Don’t forget, thousands of souls have gone or been maimed as a result of these. So, should we be singing eulogies or dirges at this point of euphoria? Think about it and tell me which one should be adopted. After all, we all belong to the system. It isn’t a one-man show. Whichever song that suits the season, all I know and strongly believe is that, Nigeria must be better because it’s a divine state and the talents for the revival mission are scattered all over. Mine isn’t a paradox. It’s a fact because the Lord is good.
Brethren, in the past, comfrey had been used to treat the ongoing arthritis and gout. I think, we should try a different herb. This is the ripe season for the herbal transition. Or, what do you think? Don’t forget, necessity remains the mother of all inventions. Meanwhile, happy birthday Nigeria!

New year Jubilee
NEW YEAR JUBILEE: THE GENESIS OF AN ODYSSEY
Brethren, it has almost become a cliche to say that someone is redrawing the map of the world. Same is applicable to seeing actors in their dramatic moods. For many years, several cultural and historic monuments have been destroyed which has tremendously jeopardized the progress of various historical jubilees that would had constituted many historic remarks. Most of these remarks that have existed in the past successively were lately misunderstood by the present generation, therefore, being observe as mere clichés.
Saturday penultimate week, one of my bosom friends residing in Abuja called to register his extreme anticipation in respect to the forth coming year, 2013 precisely. In his first sentence, he informed me that he couldn’t wait to see the new year. I tried to find out the actual cause of the immeasurable anxiety, though which is most times normal amongst mankind. He further informed me that he had already set aside a very tangible resolution that would commence as soon as 2013 begins. At this juncture still on the phone conversation, I became more curious and my curiosity was accompanied with enthusiastic inquisition. Thus, I persuaded him to disclose the resolution to me even though he wasn’t ready to let the cat out of the bag, and he succumbed to my humble persuasion. He told me that he had made a resolution that in the coming year (2013), he would never taste beer or any alcoholic drink again. Honestly, I laughed because the fellow in question has been known by all and sundry as one of those who believe that beer should always be in one’s tummy irrespective of the nature of the weather. And this is why he was not ready to disclose the resolution to me because he knew I would certainly consider it as a mere annual cliché being vomited (cited) by millions of youths scattered all over. But, he further let me see reason why his was a distinguished one by backing it up with some facts or experiences. I concluded by telling him “bravo!” and he was so delighted to receive such gesture/exclamation from me.
In any perspective your observation or analysis might be standing on, the fact remains that any anniversary is necessary regardless of the nature/kind or its area of interest. Sometimes the discrepancies between school records and examination results may not be considered necessary because both are found on academic environment. But notwithstanding, in any two or more existing similar materials or facts, there must be a distinct dichotomy among them. In other words, if many anniversaries or jubilees have been in existed for donkey’s years, one or two of them must be definitely different / distinct. Let’s put it this way; if two babies are born simultaneously and they happen to be identical twins, there must be certain difference(s) lying between them.
We are discussing New Year jubilee/anniversary. A new year is a certain different year that has just been encountered by mankind which the beginning takes place in every 365 days. In the world at large, the commencement of such year always calls for a jubilee among the entire mankind irrespective of religious or cultural affiliations. The world celebrates the 1st of every New Year to mark a certain distinct journey that has just begun. In other words, every New Year is regarded as a different odyssey that has just been embarked on, and each day that makes the year in question is seen as one of the steps that constitute the journey since any journey must begin with a step. Most people come up series of resolutions at the beginning of every calendar year; few end up actualizing theirs while most of them often fail at the end of the odyssey. And these, failures and successes have been a point of attraction to many concerned souls in regard to New Year resolution(s). Let’s ride on!
Brethren, New Year jubilee is truly a welcome phenomenon that has resulted to many worthwhile histories. As we celebrate such day, courtesy or tradition demands for a certain useful individual resolution to be reached. And, the resolution should be seen as the essence of such jubilation. Having reached a certain resolution, there is optimum need for such decision to be accompanied with adequate practical-intensive support to ensure that its outcome becomes a success. Having backed up your decision with an intensive support, then you shouldn’t relent to couple such journey with tremendous prayers and faith. Any of the above tools or measure should not be taken for granted if you truly want your goal to be actualized. There’s no two ways about it. Therefore, for success to be attained there must be a certain target or dream. And, such dream/aim must be accompanied with hard-work coupled with any necessary avoidance, adequate prayers and tremendous faith. But don’t forget, sometimes failure(s) might be necessary regardless of the amount of effort put in any of your aims/objects. And, this is where nature comes in. Certainly, man proposes but God disposes.
Having stated the above facts, honestly New Year jubilee or anniversary is surely the genesis of a certain odyssey therefore calls for adequate maintenance. Think about it! On this note, I love this historic and tumultuous season, thus, compliment of it to you all!!

Malaria as a Killer Disease
MALARIA AS A KILLER DISEASE
Brethren, is another bright new day for bright friends and fans of your kind. If I say I’m happy to be here again, then I’m a liar; honestly I’m not just happy but so delighted. Yes, because it’s another moment to discuss with my likes. A moment to talk to people standing on this rostrum with me. Don’t forget, my interest remains, “a panacea”.
Truly, it’s wholly inexplicable to see two bonafide mad men fighting on the street. Same is applicable to observing two legible fishes competing over a certain prey in the water. The similarity of the above observations is that, in the former, one would not know the actual cause/origin of the fight unless you’re one of them. Or, would you, if you happen to be the observer? Similarly, in the latter, you may not know the real reason for the competition between the two fishes because the prey in question might be so minute (tiny). These and more similar various observations take place virtually every day. Most of them are natural or mysterious which make them strictly inexplicable. But, some or few are man-made. That is, being initiated or founded by mankind just to suit their personal interest.
Few days ago, a good and bosom friend of mine residing in Lagos State just called to share one of his social gist with me as usual. He started with the clause, “Nigeria is a very funny country”. I responded with a bit smile which was invisible to him. I smiled because such or similar citations amongst the Nigerian citizenry come often, if not daily. After the sudden clause which came as a preamble, he proceeded by telling me that he regretted being a Nigerian or finding himself in Nigeria. This time, I was pissed off because it was unlike him. I know him too well right from childhood; he had always been one of the men who believe that Nigeria could suddenly become better than any other countries in the world. So at that juncture, I became more attentive to his gist or about to be disclosed ordeal because, “a toad does not run in the afternoon in vain”. My good friend told me that, two previous days before he called, one of his colleagues in the office displayed a very pathetic and disgusting drama before him. And, the drama took place right in the office. He and the colleague in question share an office. So I asked him what the drama was like. He said that his colleague just walked into the office that fateful day, morning precisely, and slumped on the floor immediately. According to him, initially he thought the young man was kidding but later discovered that he had really fainted. He went straight to him, stood him up and lean him on one of the upholstery chairs lying in the office. As soon as the fellow regained his consciousness after taking some water coupled with rest, my friend tried to find out what really prompted the scenario. He responded that his eyes were rotating in such a manner that he couldn’t control himself. He asked him if he was facing any medical problem, and he replied “yes”. According to my friend, the victim had earlier gone for a medical laboratory test/screening and his result read two pluses in malaria parasite. The lab technician listed some drugs for him and also referred him to his doctor, but he ignored both instructions because he was still physically strong. He only went for panadol to calm the slight headache he was having with the impression that all was well. Therefore, he took the lab result for granted. Unfortunately, he found himself in that mess on that fateful morning. At that juncture after narrating his ordeal, my friend felt like giving him thousands of dirty slaps. In fact, he was totally disgusted going by his narration on phone.
Brethren, we’re discussing malaria. Malaria is a serious disease caught from mosquitoes and which causes periods of fever. We’ve three types of mosquitoes in existence and they are Culex, Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes. Amongst these three, it’s only anopheles mosquito that can cause malaria. It’s the only specie that possesses the bacteria/parasite known as ‘plasmodium” which solely constitutes malaria. It’s plasmodium which is being injected by the female anopheles mosquitoes that causes malaria in the human body. So many things can attract mosquitoes to our immediate environment. But above all, dirt remains the most existing point of attraction to all mosquitoes. It’s a fact that water attracts mosquitoes enormously because that is the natural habitat for their breeding. But mostly, they feel more comfortable in dirty water because it is only in such place they can survive effectively. Thus, damp and dirty environment remains the common habitat for mosquitoes. In other words, we must continue to keep our surroundings clean to ensure that we say good bye to mosquitoes because they are not our friends.
Apart from the above, many people infected by malaria parasite mostly take it for granted because they ignorantly think that it’s a minor disease/infection just as it was stated in my friend’s story. Due to this, such people end up playing with the disease, if not their lives, when being infected by it. Brethren, malaria flogs; it disciplines; it maims. Above all, it kills. It has killed or maimed billions of individuals in the past before the actual drugs were discovered. Despite the discovering of the drug, people still die on daily basis as a result of malaria disease, due to ignorance.
We must learn how to consult the lab technicians if any symptom(s) emerges. We must also learn how to see our respective doctors and adhere to their advice(s) having being consulted. Most importantly, we should not forget that life is extremely precious and has no duplicate or spare part. We must continue to think in the right direction in order to live long and remain fit to carry out our daily obligations. “To be forewarned is to be forearmed”. Think about it!

Lack of Reading Habit
LACK OF READING HABIT IN AFRICA
Few days ago, penultimate Wednesday to be precised, I was extremely forlorn. A mood I had never for once imagined to be since I became an adult. Some hours before the day in question, I was celebrating, or joyous, exalted and free. Little did I know that, I would subsequently found myself in a state of poignancy. If I may ask, what really prompted the sudden moment of dismay? A dispiriting moment. A moment that introduced the spiteful and disobliging part of me. A cruel and cursed moment. Brethren, honestly in that moment or period of time, I almost quit my interest in writing. I was about throwing my beloved pen in a rejected waste bin located very close to my lodge. I nearly vacated my duty in society transformation which I have been doing through pen deposition. The vigorous spirit I was known for virtually disappeared. My vivacious nature totally introduced a vitriolic scene. A coarse scene indeed!
Let’s talk about what prompted the sad mood. One of my friends who resides in Calabar, Cross-River State embarked on a brief trip to Owerri. According to him, the trip was meant to last for four days. On the third day being Wednesday, he paid me a visit in my lodge at Owerri as planned. As he walks into the sitting room after a brief knock at the entrance, in his left hand lies a copy of White-paper newspaper, Monday edition to be precised. As soon as he sat down after exchanging a warm pleasantry with me, being a regular columnist in the Monday edition, I asked him how he felt about my work. I concluded that he must had come across the work since the paper had stayed more than fourty-eight (48) hours in his hand. But he responded; which work? I reacted; my column in the paper you’re holding of course. Your column? He asked surprisely. I smiled. At this point, I realized he was yet to embrace my column. I wouldn’t blame the poor man because he was yet to know that I’m a columnist or a social analyst. He only knew me as a contractor; a practising engineer. So, it was far from his imagination. But to be honest, I was bittered because he had all the opportunity to digest all the columns contained in a paper which he had personalized for almost three (3) days. Even if digesting the content of all the columns was an enormous task to him, he should had realized that his bosom friend was one of the columnists. After all, my name didn’t change in the paper, and my humble portrait was still representing Fred Nwaozor. Brethren, I quickly collected the paper from him, went straight to my column and disclosed it to him. He was marveled, shocked, dumbfounded and astonished. His countenance suddenly became irritating to me. Though, that never lasted for more than three seconds. After all, it’s a common phenomenon in our continent, Africa; Nigeria precisely. Honestly, lack of reading habit has betrayed our gifted treasure. I asked my friend if he was yet to go through all the pages in the paper. On the contrary, he said that he has gone through all the pages extensively. And, has even read my column but didn’t take note of the author. I knew he was referring to perusal, not ‘reading’ as he claimed.
Later in the day after my friend’s departure, in my lonely mood, I recollected what transpired during our meeting in respect to reading habit, and was about making up my mind to quit my writing profession since my target audience (the public) are far from it. But what restored my good mood was the issue of the reactions I’ve been receiving since I embarked on this journey. So, I told myself that though few is lackadaisical over reading but many remains a bookworm. I knew I was not telling myself the gospel truth because the reverse is the case. I did that to console myself. But honestly speaking, my last edition on ‘Fear of the Unknown’ which I drew a curtain for reaction(s) signified that many still read. It’s a fact. Yes, a fancy fact. Many are close to the media. On the other hand, many are still far from it. It’s not a paradox. Still a fact!
I could vividly remember one of my previous editions on ‘Scentic Scenarios’, education to be precised. In that edition, I made mention of a fellow who was privileged to have a meeting notice pasted at his door-step, but he never cared to glance at it. Not even a perusal. And he was severely deformed and sidelined. In fact, he loss his long-lasted dignity in the community due to that.
Brethren, all hands must be on deck to put to stop this ongoing devastating phenomenon in Africa. The parents, teachers/lecturers, governments, NGOs and churches have a very vital role to play in their respective obligations. The media is not left out in this desirable and enormous task ahead. Our reading culture must be revived in earnest. ‘To be forewarned is to be forearmed’. The Lord is good, so He shall definitely see us through.

Idleness
IDLENESS: JUDAS OF OUR TIME!
Brethren, Nwafor Orizu and Jaja Nwachukwu remain the first Senate President and first indigenous Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria respectively. On the other hand, the history still has it that, Kenneth Dike and Chike Obi were the first Nigerian Vice-Chancellor and the first Nigerian to gain PhD in Mathematics respectively. These and more distinguished histories are attributable to the business of the mind. A history must be made as a result of how busy a certain mind is. Thus, unequivocally, an idle mind can never make a history.
Mind you, that a certain mind is tagged as the busiest amongst others does not imply that the legs belonging to the mind is in motion for every eighty six thousand, four hundred seconds (86400 sec.) that make a day. On the other hand, a busy mind, even at stationary position does not have time for chatting, gossiping, playing or dancing, as the case may be. In other words, at a given time or period of time, a certain mindset could be indoor but remains the most busiest among others provided that it’s paramount interest is business and not leisure. Don’t forget, some persons’ profession is dancing. And, if any member of such group indulges in the activity (dancing) while indoor, he/she should not be seen as an idle person. No profession is a waste or at the least, or should be tagged as a subordinate. After all, if properly traced, the Late Michael Jackson developed his singing talent from dancing. And till his death, he remained the world most notable pop musician. Let’s ride on!
In any angle you stand to digest the context of this topic “idleness”, the fact that accompanies the popular citation “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop” still holds. I repeat, idleness has nothing to do with the position or state of the mind in question. You might be lying in a bed but the mind is extremely busy. You may be standing in the midst of a worthless crowd but your mind is working tirelessly and up to something useful which shall be of great economic importance. In a different angle, your legs might be walking without a brake throughout the whole day but you are idle. Idleness is not an action of the leg or hand. It is an action of the mind. It’s an action of the brain. It’s a product of the cerebrum. Brethren, cerebrum is that part of the brain that deals with reasoning. It determines the rate at which we think. And, thinking or reasoning remains the basis, foundation or rudiments of any invention. Thus, any invention is a product of the cerebral efficacy. Though, any invention must be accompanied or implemented with the hand, eye and/or leg. And these are what we can see. We can’t see the real manufacturer of the invention which is the “brain”.
In a different dimension, some busy brains are into something dubious, evil or devilish. And, this is not what I’m advocating for. You must learn to utilize your brain for something useful. Something that can make a notable history in a society you belong. Something that can attract the entire public to your person. Something that should speak for you in every blessed moment, even after your eternal departure. Those are what your brain is meant for. Try to be on the crest of a wave in any useful career you find yourself. Try to make a good and reasonable wave in your worthwhile career. Create a distant and immeasurable wavelength. In physics, a wave is used to refer to the way in which things such as sound or light travel. And, the wavelength is the overall distance covered by a certain wave. The light wave travels faster than any other existing wave, therefore, covers a very long wavelength within a short time. Brethren, I advise you make a “light wave” in your respective worthwhile endeavours.
In my previous edition, I spoke on time management. This is also a consequential edition in respect to that. If your time is not properly managed, you would create more room for idleness. And that is an avenue the devil would capitalize on. He (the devil) would be chanced to make all sorts of instruments in your mind at such period of time. Don’t ever create room for idleness. If you are already addicted to it, please kindly desist from it because it kills. It maims. It betrays. It’s detrimental to your social and psychological status. Even the leisure time should be occupied with a nap, siesta, pleasure reading, games, exercise, and what have you. Mind you, idleness would betray you. And, such betrayal would definitely lead you to a point of doom. Be warned!
Even if you’re a lady/woman, you shouldn’t see yourself as a passive element, or an element that has a certain limit. After all, the likes of Fumilayo Anikulakpokuti and Chinyere Onyemaucheya still live. Also, the likes of Margaret Ekpo are still in our number. We all were created for a purpose and we must live and stride towards actualizing that purpose. Think about it!

High level of Poverty
HIGH LEVEL OF POVERTY IN AFRICA
Taking out the gun out of the glove compartment of your car may not be enough weapon to wipe out the monster standing right before the car in question. Most times, such predicament initiates a hallucination showcasing a moment at which the car windscreen is being shrouded in mist thereby resulting to a false accusation against the innocent climate. Even the holy beings that constantly and consistently embrace the holy writ had also fell victim of such circumstance. What a vulnerability!
Brethren, the continual skilful exploitation of the above weakness (vulnerability) by the elements in disguise remains a sole constituent of the ongoing grievous socio-political nightmares, such as prostitution, election rigging, rape, child abuse, just to mention a few.
The state at which people of a particular country or race has very little money or few possessions is occurring with a high increase rate in Nigeria. Other African countries are not left out in this deadly disease. This issue of poverty is really digging deep on our socio-economic platform, therefore, should not be taken for granted.
According to the poverty line drawn by the World Bank (WB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) as one US dollar ($1) per day. That is, every average individual in the world is expected to spend at least one dollar in a day. This implies that, anyone who spends less than one dollar in a day is considered to be poor. Thus, if a proper measure is taken, we will find out that over seventy nine percent (79%) of the Nigerian populace are poor. Most of them don’t just live below the poverty line which is one USD per day, but spend less than half of it (#75) in two days. This set of people are known to be vulnerable.
A vulnerable person is weak and without protection, therefore, could be easily hurt physically, emotionally, or mentally. Vulnerability state of a person is a situation that can lead to so many intimidations or hazards in all aspects of his/her life. Such person can easily be used by the so-called high class members to achieve their selfish interest or personal desires in many areas of life. That is, they can be influenced by any wealthy or influential person. They maybe cajoled into any dirty occupation or assignment, after which they would be paid a token sum of money. Sometimes, the female ones among them end-up being raped by some nasty citizens. In other words, a vulnerable person is exposed to many kinds of illnesses or diseases due to lack of gastronomic incentives, and the practice of settling in an unsanitized environment. And, anyone of them attacked by any disease might end-up in the grave due to lack of sufficient money to take care of him/herself. Most times, some of the medical doctors/personnel in various hospitals would choose to remain adamant of such situation and will never care to render a humanitarian service to these less-privileged individuals.
Above all, most of these vulnerable persons end-up indulging in various social vices such as begging in disguise and prostitution to earn for their living. The children amongst them may also not be sent to the school by their respective parents because of lack of sufficient money to cater for their tuition fees and/or other academic requirements. This circumstance is one of the major causes of the high increase rate of illiteracy in Africa. Furthermore, some of these persons may suddenly become insane when being infected by any disease(s) that is not properly treated, especially the Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). In a nutshell, poverty has silenced most of the available manpower in Africa, Nigeria in particular. Thus, could be referred to as a grievous developmental hindrance.
I humbly solicit that, hospitals/clinics should be established in all nooks and crannies of the country, coupled with adequate health facilities. Also, free education ought to be granted to the poor or less-privileged by the state and federal governments. The philanthropists should also help in actualizing this goal. I must confess, so far from my humble observation, the Rochas Okorocha’s administration in Imo State is really trying in regard to this. But, more effort need to be put to ascertain enormous success.
Please, let something drastic be done by the respective governments to alleviate these hostile and deadly situations. The previous editions on “Scentic Scenarios” should be re-visited/considered in regard to the alleviation mentioned above. ‘A stitch in time saves nine”.

Fire Outbreaks
Brethren, a good poet or a librettist would prefer to express a whole life story in a few words to compiling thousands of pages that would suit same expression/narration. On the other hand, a novelist would stop at nothing in using his/her prolific initiative/talent while putting up a certain ordeal or experience whenever he/she is being asked to do so. Whichever amongst the aforementioned styles/systems is invoked, the fact remains that creative ingenuity is being utilized.
Let’s put it this way; if a certain wrestler strongly believes in the work of consistent practice if he must remain a victor. And on the other hand, a full flesh boxer always goes for drugs to ascertain his victory. The fact behind the two distinct ideologies is that, both professionals/personnel acknowledge the efficacy of physical strength if victory must be ascertained. Thus, physical power is always utilized while struggling for victory, or if one wishes to be victorious. Summarily, two experts operating under the aegis of two similar professions respectively are definitely made up of two distinct talents or ideologies. Let’s ride on!
Wednesday penultimate week, 9th of January 2013 precisely, as soon as I woke up from sleep, one of my closest relatives in Awo-Omamma, my home town called to inform me that one of our family houses in the town in question had burned to ashes. Firstly, I urged her to be reasonable and speak like a decent lady she had always being with the extreme impression that she was clowning. Rather, regardless of my persuasion, she stood her ground and hurriedly asked me to be attentive and all ears to the notice she had for me. At this juncture, I needed not a prophet to interpret the fear I perceived from her voice, thus I suddenly felt like one who was electrocuted. The spirit of ebullience that was known to be my sole motivation varnished instantly. Without dishing out any word to express my dismay because I became a living corpse in subsequent to what I sensed from her voice, she proceeded by telling me that the incident took place in the previous night owing to what was suspected as a grievous carelessness exhibited by one of the tenants. I furiously tried to find out the actual cause of the disaster, and also, the tenant in question, but the informant dropped her call without adding any other word. Without taking my bath, I quickly got ready and began my journey to Awo-Omamma to see things for myself.
On reaching the scene of the incident, brethren, I cried like a baby and suddenly became dizzy due to what I saw from my panoramic view/sight. Even if one was yet to witness the scene, the echo of the pandemonium being produced by the victims and the spectators obviously signified that Rome was on fire, or has been brought down. To be precise, I found a huge outburst of emotion. The scenario was extremely disastrous; no pin was recovered. A 16-room bungalow coupled with two shops and other residential facilities was completely burned to ashes; even, metals were destroyed. I was yet to witness such fire outbreak since my mother begot me. But thank God, no live was lost.
Same day, similar incident took place at Apapa in Lagos State, and several lives and properties were maimed / destroyed. Also, few weeks ago penultimate month to be precise, one of the houses at Owerri belonging to a prominent personality and one of the traditional rulers in the State (Imo State) got burnt. Hundreds of similar incidence had occurred across the federation within the harmattan period.

The charred bits of burnt house at Awo-Omamma, Imo State - Nigeria
We’re discussing harmattan season and fire outbreaks. Harmattan season is a period of time in most tropical countries in which the soil becomes sandy and dusty, and the weather becomes cold accompanied with unusual breeze/air. On the other hand, fire outbreak is a sudden occurrence of fire in a certain place or arena. Most experts believe that harmattan is often accompanied with various human disasters, while some persons strongly believe that it’s a very favourable and human friendly season. These two distinct ideologies have constituted two different factions or groups among mankind. Respective of the existing ideologies, the fact remains that lives and property are in question.
Brethren frankly speaking, the demerit attached to harmattan season supersedes the merit. Even the fire outbreaks in question become more rampant and severe during the season due to the enormous breeze experience in it. Many theories have been discovered and several reactions were subsequently developed in respect to the above critique. But notwithstanding, the gospel truth is that harmattan season requires adequate and extreme carefulness from the concerned individuals because most of the ordeals experienced during the season are often due to carelessness of the immediate victim(s).
On the above note, we must try to apply absolute carefulness in whatever we do irrespective of the season we are into because carefulness is the only tool that ascertains healthy living and long life. Take for instance, most times you see people storing petrol or any other inflammable petroleum product(s) in their respective bedrooms. Some even go a long way keeping it directly under their bed. What ignorance! In fact, I don’t think this should be referred to as ignorance. It’s stupidity because there’s no a-day old child who is yet to know that inflammable materials/products are human unfriendly. On the other hand, there’s no child in this part of the world who is yet to be informed that most petroleum products are highly inflammable.
Apart from considering the circumstances that provoke fire outbreaks, we must also consider the actual origin/cause of the fire. In most cities or developed towns, landlords prohibit the use of candle light by the tenants. In the same vein, in most homes, the heads prohibit the use of gas-cooking device. Same is applicable in most hostels established in various institutions of higher learning in Nigeria; the students/occupants are often warned by their landlords to desist from the use of the above equipment. From my humble perspective which signifies my distinct opinion/ideology as an individual, I think it’s inconsequential to prohibit the use of any decent household material such as the ones mentioned above. The bone of contention is carefulness. Yes, instead of citing such warning or law, the concerned persons should be warned to be extremely careful while using any of the above devices else they stand to pay for any damage(s) that may possibly occur. Above all, we should also realize that life has no duplicate or spare part. While using a candle light, you should endeavour to quench it before going to bed or as soon as you’re through with what you lit for. Similar measures should also be applied while using other similar devices. Apart from using a gas-cooker, someone who is cooking or who’s into cookery is not expected to stay away from the kitchen, or the kitchen arena. Stove or other heating utensils can also cause a fire outbreak if a careful measure is not adhered to. “To be forewarned is to be forearmed”.
Above all, the government has a very vital role to play here. The various governments should establish a formidable and reliable Fire Service Commission. Such Commission/Agency shall have well equipped and functional quarters in any existing town. And every occupant of the town must have access to their contact(s) in case of any emergency or eventuality. Also, a well equipped aircraft/jet should be made available to take care of any fire outbreak in any affected State or zone. The vehicle would be operating above the point of the incident and such measure would hasten the approach and as well ascertain absolute result.
Having mentioned the above measure, the concerned government in any fire outbreak should endeavour to compensate the casualties, including the landlord. The government is expected to ensure that any of its affected subjects is duly catered for, so that he/she would continue to announce to delirious applause that the Lord is good. We must continue to think in the right direction for our society to be better.
My candid advice to the landlords and other valuable property owners; please endeavour to insure your properties with any recognized insurance company in your area. This would enable you to receive compensation from the company if the insured property is damaged or stolen.
Brethren at this juncture, I put up this note; fire maims. It kills. It has maimed and killed millions of souls, and it’s still ready to consume more. So be warned.
Honestly, if adequate measure is taken, we must surely find out that several deaths that occurred in the past were due to carelessness of the affected individuals. Some of us refer it as mystery which they tag as inexplicable event, but the fact remains that the devil was duly invited. Think about it!

Fear of the Unknown
FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN: A WORTHLESS SYNDROME
A good friend of mine once shared one of his terrible ordeals with me on one fateful evening. Before he commenced, he let me realized that the story was strictly personal, therefore, I shouldn’t let a third party know about it. Apparently, he confided in me. But brethren, at this juncture I wish to break out of my normal reticence and tell you the whole story. Though, I won’t let him down. Thus, his identity will not be disclosed. Moreover, I sought for his consent. And, he asked me to proceed provided his identity won’t be disclosed. So, I’ve the ticket. The passport. The visa. The authority. The power of attorney. Above all, the license to proceed. Since the story can convert or redirect one of two souls, why should I let it die with me? The story shouldn’t remain in bondage. It’s forbidden. It’s sacrilegious. It’s not encouraging. Of course, it lacks ethics or tradition. Tradition demands that, you tell others what shall make them live long. It’s a fact. Yes, a fancy fact.
The story goes like this; he solemnly disclosed to me that he made ‘third class’ in his bachelor’s degree, Bachelor of Science to be precise. A personal issue he never thought of sharing with any friend. Only the members of his immediate family were aware of it. He kept on influencing the grade each time he had a chat or an encounter with anyone who cared to know what he graduated with. Due to the possession of a low grade, he was so lackadaisical towards applying for any job even when he was asked/mandated to do so. To him, he was a total failure. He never thought of anything right. All he could think of was nothing but the end of the road. Failure. Vulnerability. Hallucination indeed! But who told him he was vulnerable? Brethren, fear of the unknown. I warned him to desist his mental status from such myopic and deadly feeling. That was not even the end of the story. I tried to find out from him why he graduated with a low grade because I used to know him as a brilliant chap during our secondary schools days in Lagos State. And, he was still showcasing same brilliant idiosyncrasy after graduation as I could testify. I knew he wouldn’t hesitate to respond to my question since he had made up his mind to share the story of his life with me. And, he wasn’t disingenuous at all. According to him, while in the university, his father was suffering from a severe ailment; kidney failure precisely. Being the first child of the family, he was psychologically disturbed due tohis father’s illness. There was no time he could find himself reading or listening to lecture comfortably. In fact, he was a quarter baked student throughout his undergraduate programme. His optimum fear was that, if he loses his father, definitely he was finished. Fear of the unknown! His father was a successful civil servant and the breadwinner of the troubled family. His marriage was blessed with five children; three males and two females. Luckily for him, some of his colleagues and club associates volunteered to take him to oversea for a medical operation. And, the operation was successful. Then, my friend was on his project. He had already rounded off his degree exams out of his usual mental instability, Today, his beloved father still lives. What a story!
I shouldn’t blame my friend for his psychological imbalance or uncertainty because being human, the circumstance called for it. But, he should have acknowledged the fact that, God still liveth. He would had looked unto Him and face his studies. I repeat, he was not mistaken with his unwanted feelings because he was afraid of losing everything. No man born of a woman would like to lose everything he has. Not even me. But let’s ask ourselves; if we eventually lose everything or all our treasures, have we lost God? Brethren, if anyone could be occupied with the feeling of losing his/her creator, then, that is absolute madness. Yes, he/she must be definitely insane. Come to think of it; why should my dear friend nurture the feeling of being a failure because he possesses a third-class honour or a ‘low grade’? What does grade has to do with one’s potential? If truly you have a certain potential or talent, your grade or CGPA should not in any way be seen as a barrier. Check the list of all the professors in the world. Find out if up to seventy percent (70%) can boast of a second-class honour.
The fact remains determination/focus. And, that is the key. Yes, the only key to that success room. If you had thoroughly checked yourself and find out that you have the brain, talent/potential, and above all, a dream. Then, where comes or lies the barrier/limitation. If truly you can see any barrier in this case, then you’re the barrier. You shouldn’t be weighed down simply because you incidentally or accidentally graduated with a low grade. Such cases or similar issues are attributable to myopic thinking and not a low grade or whatever you may call it. Mark my words adequately. Of course, you shouldn’t be afraid of something you have not seen or are yet to see. To me, it’s crazy. It’s insanity. It’s irritating and disgusting. Wake up brethren! Be brave and smart at all time.
But mind you, I’m not advocating for lousiness while in school or on campus. Your primary aim of being there is nothing but your studies. So, it should be taken seriously. I don’t think there’s anyone who would like to graduate with a low grade even if he’s an imbecile. “A word is enough for the wise”.
Brethren, be reasonable, serious, determined, and alert at every given time. Don’t let any of your past destabilized or destruct your present. Your past should remain your reference point and not your guidance. Above all, be the panacea to your predicament(s). Think about it!
Meanwhile, kindly send your reaction/opinion and it would be welcomed.

Nigerian Post Graduate Schools
THE LONG DURATION OF SCIENCE ORIENTED PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA'S POST GRADUATE SCHOOLS
Brethren, as usual I stand on the pulpit once more to preach nothing but the gospel truth. I reassure and sincerely promise you that as long as you remain a member of the congregation of my humble ministry, you shall no doubt be very close to realism. Thank God I’ve often time given a hint on the aforementioned school of thought, realism; thus, it’s no longer a new term to us. Please as you follow or cherish any preacher, try to be mindful of impostors because imitations are everywhere. Let’s ride on!
“Please obey the church order!” That was an exclamation that was dished out by a church warden presiding in one of the Catholic churches situated in Imo State during a certain requiem mass I attended. The said instruction was as a result of the anomaly the warden noticed among some members of the congregation. From my observation, I understood that some of the presentees were sitting while they were meant to kneel down. In spite of the instruction which also served as a reminder to most of them who were members of the Catholic dominion, some remained adamant in an issue relating to the modus operandi of a church. What impunity in a place of worship! I was extremely disgusted over the ugly scene. You needed to view my sympathetic mood.
It’s no longer news that many have been parading with the popularly cited chorus which’s of the view that education is the backbone or rudiments of any nation’s developmental stride. But how prepared are we to stand by any educational crusade/cause? Yes, since most of the learned individuals has started behaving like mere bunch of ignoramuses, everyone has suddenly become skeptical over any proposed positive transition as regards education. If not, how can a country like Nigeria still be debating or romancing over infrastructural decay in her various citadel of higher learning. Even our secondary/primary schools are not left out in the ongoing matter.
Lately I’ve come to realize that the above stated anomaly, infrastructural decay, occurring in our various higher institutions is one of the paramount causes of the long duration of most science oriented disciplines in our post graduate schools. It beats my psyche each time I look around and see most of our post graduate students spending over four years or thereabouts in a discipline that’s expected to last for just eighteen (18) calendar months as regards master degree (MSc/MA) programmes; or spending over six years in one that’s bound to last for three years or thereabouts in respect to doctorate degree programmes. This syndrome is common among the pure/advanced science students.
I’ve also come to acknowledge the fact that the plight of the students in question does not lie only on the infrastructural decay; I’m of the view that the University teachers are also the problem. Most of our lecturers has borrowed the habit of being self-centered or attending to issues that are of their personal interests. Whosoever that lent the habit to them is what I don’t know or can’t explain. For instance, most of them dodge their respective lecture classes with the aim of issuing series of handouts to the students, whilst some don’t even provide time to discuss the project works embarked on by the students assigned/allocated to them thereby prolonging the usual/stipulated duration of the project work as well as the programme in general. Even, some of the lecturers demands huge amount of cash from the students before their project would be considered or attended to.
For crying out loud, reasonable amount of time is required in science oriented courses because these are disciplines that are practically intensive. When I mention “time”, I’m actually referring to the time the concerned lecturers are expected to cough up for the students. Handouts can never address the issue of learning as regards science-oriented fields, rather, thorough teaching coupled with sound laboratory/workshop coaching. If the required time is not being provided by the lecturers, it goes a long way tarnishing the academic image of the learners and as well lingers the stipulated duration of their programmes.
At this juncture, I urge the concerned societies/groups such as Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) and other related bodies to put more effort towards ascertaining the bad eggs and to ensure that the required facilities in our various Universities are provided by the appropriate authorities/quarters.
Enough of today’s preaching because we’ve gotten the message; therefore I hereby draw my curtail. Meanwhile before I leave, I must let us know that it’s high time we quitted the outrageous occurrence of impunity being displayed on a daily basis even in a place of worship. Think about it!

Mathematics & its Odyssey
MATHEMATICS AND ITS ODYSSEY SO FAR
Even if one is suffering from haemophilia, we still need to understand that same person is made up of a reasonable amount of haemoglobin. In other words, the term “haemoglobin” known as the red blood pigment which is widely recognized as one of the fundamental functional units in the body of mankind is expected to be present in any living person’s circulatory system regardless of the condition being faced by him/her.
In case we have forgotten; let me draw us closer to some certain facts. We were told that in the beginning God created man in His own image having created all other things/creatures in existence. But have you ever in your lonely mood imagined how those systems in our body were factored together to function as a single formidable structure? You can imagine or be disturbed on how certain things came into existence, but that doesn’t mean that you must come out with a tangible answer. Yes, thinking is natural but the metamorphosis of some of our thoughts may be tagged as supernatural.
Let’s have it this way; those imaginary thoughts that may end up being fruitless, or those deeds/events that we cannot find the reason behind their occurrence are known as mysteries. So having noted this fact, we are bound to realize that there is limit for every ability possessed by mankind. We should also acknowledge that, there are certain qualities we cannot shy or run away from because nature has mandated us to possess some elements of such quality.
This edition has Mathematics as its topic. Mathematics is a subject which involves the study of numbers, quantities, or shapes.
Some time ago, one of my academic sons called from Lagos State to inform me that he secured admission in University of Lagos (UNILAG) to study Mathematics. He told me that he never applied for the discipline, but it was offered to him as an alternative. I knew he was not too sound in mathematics; so I asked him how he intends to cope. He responded that he was going to maneuver every obstacle by using any possible means. I laughed, and frowned too. Yes my physiognomy showcased both idiosyncrasies. It wasn’t a paradox considering the circumstance in question. Because the statement discharged by the poor boy was amusing and devastating.
It is no longer news that Mathematics remains the basis of all sciences, both pure and advanced including social. Yes, there’s no social science discipline that does not depend on or not affiliated to Mathematics.
Above all, I want to state here unequivocally that likewise any famous language on earth, be it spoken or unspoken, Mathematics remains the most famous language in the universe, though may be regarded as an unspoken language. I call it unspoken because no one/group officially recognizes or uses Mathematics as a means of communication. But notwithstanding, I define it as the only language being used by mankind in its day-to-day activity. Take for instance, someone can dwell without all spoken languages on earth since we have other languages or means of communication such as signs, telepathy et cetera, but no one can dwell without observing Mathematics as a language either knowingly or unknowingly. Thus, Mathematics which I call a language of numbers or numerals is widely observed/used by all and sundry. If you doubt me or if you are skeptical over my analysis/opinion, then kindly take a walk to any bus-stop close to you. I bet you; you will discover that even the touts speak Mathematics. In a nut shell, no one can run away from mathematics. It’s natural.
Despite the enormous value attached to Mathematics, it has been abused greatly by most of us including the so-called teachers/tutors of the subject. Go to most of our secondary schools; you will see that the subject is no longer considered seriously by the respective management of the schools. A high rate of apathy has been registered by both the students and teachers as regards Mathematics studies. Even those who have high interest in the subject have lately begun to decline in their acquired skill/enthusiasm due to lack of support or encouragement from their mentors, teachers, or relatives as the case may be.
Apart from the above, so many pathetic utterances are being dished out on a daily basis by several students. For instance, it severely beats my psyche whenever I hear a student say that he/she is reading or was reading Maths in the library. One can’t read or peruse over Mathematics. You can only solve Maths; there’s is no two ways about it.
Brethren, we all must reconsider the high importance of Mathematics in any societal growth or evolution and see how we can contribute our quota towards its promotion. The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), concerned government agencies, stakeholders and prominent individuals in the society should from time-to-time issue an Award to any best performing mathematics students in our various schools which shall serve as a motivation. The schools on their own effort ought to ensure that any applicant to be employed as a Mathematics teacher/lecturer must be duly tested to ensure that he/she is equal to the task that awaits him/her.
Don’t forget, we all must continue to think in the right direction for this enormous challenge yielding these societal cankers to be duly overcome. And the ripe time to act is now. Think about it!
